Just did a 3 year stint in Michigan and a Canada Goose got me through it. Best $1000 I've ever spent.

Now I haven't needed anything warmer than my fall jacket there, an Arcteryx down puffer.

Years ago while on a business trip in W TX the weather turned cold. Didn't have a jacket with me so I went to a local store and picked up a Carharrt hooded zip up with a quilted lining. It's been my go-to ever since.
