Home to THE Bridge to Freedom.
The Largest supplier of munitions for the Deep South during the Civil War.
Once the wealthiest city in Alabama pre Civil War and ranked top five, per capacity, in the entire south.
Once home to founder of the city, VP William Rufus King. His burial place as well.
Edgar Cayce “The Sleeping Prophet” lived here for many years and practiced photography. He gave physic readings to customers, prescribing them medicines and healing them ( and himself) from unknown illnesses at that time. I have a few old portraits of family members with his name on the back.
Birthplace of Ralph “Shug” Jordan, once head coach at Auburn.
Sam “The Banana Man” ZeMurray started his empire while here,, hopping trains back and forth to Mobile, buying and selling aged bananas as a teenager.
Founded and home to Bush Hog LLC, leading manufacturer of Agricultural implements.
Most recently know for a mishap in Montgomery between a Riverboat and local citizens on a Pontoon boat.
