For all intents and purposes, they are exactly the same.
Exactly, so the ultimate goal is for kids to get away from home. So why not go to FSU or UT where the Tallahassee and Austin scenes are worlds beyond BR, Oxford and Tuscaloosa? I went to LSU from Bunkie, and the majority of my HS class went to UL, so it was nice for me, but if I lived in BR I could certainly see wanting to get away. I just dont see the allure of Ttown over others.

Oxford is a town built on culture and heritage. It has some of the best food in the South. Look up John Currence. There are more bars and good restaurants on the square than Baton Rouge as a whole. Baton Rouge is not New Orleans. Its strip malls, chains, murders, and traffic. If it weren't for LSU, Baton Rouge would be Jackson, MS.
This. Baton Rouge only really has 4 things going for it:
LSU
BREC
a great library system
and good food and even the food is completely inferior to most of the towns and cities in the surrounding area (within 150 miles to the South, East, and West).

Also, many kids are influenced by where their parents and family members went to school, and there is a lot more information easily available about schools in other states than there used to be.
I think for some of the "rich" parents, it's about bragging rights. They think they are better because their kids don't go to LSU.
That's a big phenomenon with northeast parents sending their kids to Tulane. These northeastern kids can't get into an Ivy League, then can't get into their second, third, or fourth choices, but Tulane will gladly take them as long as Daddy is paying the full freight. Mommy then gets to go brag to all her friends about how Tulane costs as much as any Ivy League school so, therefore, it must be really good.

A huge portion of OOS kids that I've known at LSU had family connections to the state. At least half seem to have had a parent who went to school here and left (I did this, and looking back I should have taken notes on the fact that my parents GTHO).
I know about 20-25 kids from my class went to Bama and 6 that I know of went to Ole Miss. This one girl and I both came here due to family ties in Louisiana, so that is extremely accurate.

I can't speak to FSU, but I'd be willing to wager that less than 5% of the kids that leave LA and attend Alabama or Ole Miss even had a prayer of getting admitted to UT.

Tuscaloosa has some things going for it. The campus is gorgeous, rivers lakes and cliffs provide natural beauty. Easy quick access to Birmingham. A majority of students are from out of state, so you wouldn't feel out of place just because you're not from Alabama. The major highways are covered in jiffy lubes and fast food joints and strip malls. I don't use the major roads, and if you venture off and live here you will find the city's own little culture.
It is absolutely not the idyllic little college town like Oxford or Auburn. It's also absolutely not the urban shithole of Baton Rouge or Knoxville. It's somewhere in between. If you want to love it, it's very easy to. Especially as a student

Most of our class went to LSU. Some went to southern or ULL. A few to BRCC. The rest (Asians) went to rice, ivy leagues, or the military.

Some Wealthy kids look down on lsu, mostly since it's so close by it's not special. Ole Miss is a great place for wealthy kids and Alabama has an insane greek system and it's a not so subtle act of rebellion. If they grew up in tuscaloosa, they'd be going to lsu to get away.
Agreed. My sister in law graduated from Dunham and went to Bama. Her 2 choices were Bama and Ole Miss

Are the parents actually rich though or just upper middle class? The actual rich kids at my school went to schools outside of the SEC that are much more well known for academic excellence. If they stayed in the SEC, it was most likely Vandy, some aspiring engineers went to UF.

I got rejected from UT ( Texas)
But the people from my HS have loved it.

I understand these kids wanting to go away but I am confused why they go to Bama or Ole Miss. If it was Texas, UGA, or UVA then i would understand. Those places are insanely awesome.

For the record, I don't think it's a good idea to try and compare SEC schools in cities with cities that are the SEC school.
Group 1:
Nashville
Knoxville
Columbia, SC
Baton Rouge
Lexington
Fayetteville
Group 2:
Gainesville
Athens
Auburn
Tuscaloosa
Oxford
Starkville
College Station
Columbia, MO

I was actually saying Tuscaloosa is better than Gainesville.

Fayetteville is more of an all-encompassing "college town" than Tuscaloosa.

Dude, I loathe Ole Miss and everything it stands for, but Oxford actually does have a pretty cool culture once you get past the self-important snobs.
Places that have culture demonstrate things that Oxford doesn't have. Culture isn't being snooty. It's valuing unique things within the people and place that make it really stand out. You find a very heavy importance on food, on language, on history, on the uniqueness of the area, on art, music, etc. none of this is what anyone thinks of when they think of Oxford Mississippi except for those who live there or identify with it's pinky out games. It may have good table manners, and a little history like everywhere else just like it, but it's not a place of cultural destination for anyone. Nobody says to themselves when planning a trip... "Well honey, let's see, we can go to Northern California and hit up the wine country and San Francisco, we can hit Manhattan and taste the town and take in some Broadway musicals, or then there's Charleston and their sites and food, there's DC, and Miami, or maybe we can take in Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest in New Orleans, but I think we should go to Oxford Mississippi and watch an Ole Miss game".
If Oxford is a cultural destination, then shoot me.

Alabama is a good school, and the private school "elite" in LA go to Alabama to be a part of the Greek system which is obviously huge at Bama.
Ole Miss on the otherhand is the place that kids who don't have the stroke or grades to get into "elite" southern schools go so that they can still feel pretentious. Ole Miss (while not a bad school) is really no better than LSU. However, you will see your fair share of kids from Dallas, Georgia, Virginia, etc. who are there. They'll tell you that it's because OM is such a great "old south" institution, but the reality is that they couldn't get into SMU, UGA, UVA, etc.
