What is the point of certain Robo calls that don't talk?

I get a call or two daily from certain numbers that stay alive for about 10 seconds and then it disconnects. Why are they doing this?

Checking to see if the number is active to add to their databases

I've heard they are collecting your voice when you say "hello".

As long as the person on the other side after a long pause says…”This is the operator. We have traced the call and it is coming from inside your house.”

If nobody responds you're supposed to give your name, address and SSN I think, then you can hang up

That's why you answer the phone "Dígame", in a heavy Hispanic accent.

Funny because it is a work phone so I usually answer with hroh said as quickly as possible. When no one is there I sit quietly until it disconnects

I think the call centers robo call multiple numbers at a time waiting for someone to pick up. If they have their hands full with some other sucker and then you answer you just get the dead air.

Sometimes you can hear the chatter of the entire place in the background.

Robo dialers validating numbers.
If you answer or if voicemail picks up or if it just rings its validated as a real working number that scammers use to target you.
If the message "We're sorry but you have reached a number that is no longer in service" is received then its validated as a non working number that the scammers will "Spoof" to your caller I.D. when attempting to make a scam call appear to come from a local number.

Thats wild. I never answer calls I dont recognize, so I could easily see my number going on a spam number list. Makes sense - one time i received a spam call from myself. Completely tripped me out lol

The incessant scam calls are the greatest threat to homeland sanity IMHO.
Trump will fix this before he leaves office.

What's amazing is our government acted like they were going to do something about this, but somehow it's just gotten worse.

I'm no telephone engineer, but couldn't a program be written that scans then quickly determines if an incoming call is A) from out of the country, B) spoofing/disguising the actual number and C) block said call to any American verified phone number?

Without a doubt. Over the years I've been on the phone with ATT level 3 tech support for various reasons and when discussing the spoofing issue its pretty clear that they are profiting somehow from the billions of scam calls. Their justification is the 40-45% of calls that ATT labels as "Spam Risk" that comes over you caller I.D.

For some reason they make me irrationally angry. I used to jerk them around by pretending to fall for it.

I think the biggest reason is they autodial more numbers than they have lines. Also agree that as soon as the phone rings they know it's a valid number.

Pinging the number to see if it's still active.
