Of all the states I’ve visited, Utah isn’t one I count because it was just a connecting flight in Salt Lake City.

Flying through the airport shouldn’t count. Just like changing planes somewhere internationally doesn’t always get your passport stamped.

I say

Boots on the ground plus some purchase (meal, souvenir)

I've been to Vermont. I was in upstate new York. Walked across a bridge and took a picture and said I was in Vermont.

Meanwhile I've never been to Chicago but I've had connections at midway twice...

Kamala Harris considered her trip to the El Paso airport as having visited the border!

I think you have to split it to: been to/been through

Been to (any of)
-Went to an event
-Stayed the night
-Visited a specific place

Been through
-Drove through a state to get to another
-Connected at an airport

Driving through counts. If you drive through a state, you will more than likely put boots on the ground in that state anyways.

Airport layover in a state does not count.

Yesterday, the family and I drove from Big Sky, Montana to Jackson, Wyoming, and passed through 2 (big) counties in Idaho.

We stopped for snacks and a bathroom break on the way, so in typical 'corny dad' fashion I said we left a little bit of ourselves in Idaho.

But, yeah, having done that and purchased and consumed an "Idaho Spud" candy bar, seen both their mountains and miles of potato fields on our drive, I'd say we've visited Idaho...

Even if it's in an airport?

connecting flights in an airport doesn't count. too many people count their 2-hour layover as having "visited a state". anything else really counts.

I took train that passed through Nebraska. Never stopped. Does that count?

Driving through it counts. Having a layover in the airport does not.

Flew into Big Sky and drove to Yellowstone. Stayed in Island Park, Idaho. 100% of our time in Idaho was at the hotel which was just over the border. We slept, woke up and drove to Yellowstone each day.

The only time we were in Montana was the drive to the airport.

Did we “visit” Idaho and Montana? I can offer zero opinion on Idaho other than a brand new SpringHill suites.
