I’d say the visitors center is a nice start

If you have taken a shite in a state, you have "visited" it.

having driven through

passing through an airport

Let’s put a definition on it: one has to have spent 24 hours in a state to consider having “traveled” to it.
I had never been to South Dakota till yesterday. I crossed the state line heading west on I-90 around 4 pm. Checked into a hotel in Sioux Falls, went to a baseball game, ate dinner, got drunk, spent the night, woke up, ate breakfast, and was crossing back into Minnesota by 8 am. I have "traveled" to South Dakota, despite only being there for 16 hours.

So I often hear people, especially sorority girls, subtly brag about how many states they’ve been to. Would you consider having driven through or passing through an airport of a state as having been to it?
No.
Have to do at least one activity there not available anywhere else. Stopping at McDonald's doesn't count.

Spent at least one night there.
A couple of states, I've only been passing through in an airport. I don't count those.

Not hard to know both.
Doesn't really matter either way.
Not something adults brag about.

connecting flights in an airport doesn't count. too many people count their 2-hour layover as having "visited a state".
anything else really counts.

Depends on the state. If you drive the cross section of Texas, you've qualified as having "visited it".

Nobody cares how many states you have or haven't been to. Time to grow up.

I took a shite at a McDonalds in Oklahoma and now say I visited the state

Driving into it. So I would say if you live in Vidalia and you cross that Mississippi River bridge to get something at the Wal-Mart in Natchez you can say you’ve visited Mississippi in my estimation.
I don’t think a connecting flight at an airport counts though.

My definition has always been if I've stayed overnight. Drove through part of SC. Stopped for gas, but I wouldn't say I have "visited." Wouldn't say I visited if I flew in for work and flew out the same day, because I didn't really visit the state I just happened to have to be there.

Just going to the airport doesn't count but driving through does imo
You at least see the land not just sit in a building for a couple hours

i would say bare minimum required is get out of car and spend an hour or so doing something outside not in a car

I took a train through Delaware. I count that as “visiting” it because there sure isn’t much there.

And all of it spent on the time warp known as I90

I swear that’s the only stretch of road that feels like it takes 8 hours to go 350miles.
