Newfoundland’s
My Newfoundland had the best temperament of any dog I’ve ever been around. My kids would ride him around like a horse. On the plus side, having a 100+ lb large black dog that barks at strangers is a bonus. He was a teddy bear, but definitely intimidating due to his size. Once the stranger would come inside, he’d lick them.

If it will be an outside dog (mine sleeps in my shop with the ac blowing) a Golden Retriever is the best family dog I have ever owned and we have had a bunch.
If my grand daughter is outside in the yard and a strange car or person comes down the road, my dog will run and position herself against my grandaughter shielding her from the car or person.
Sheds way too much to keep inside the house though.

If you can tolerate a little messiness and aren't interested in obedience training, then you might consider a basset hound. While they're happy to play, they live to just snuggle with people all day. Very patient, calm, lovable, yet clownish temperament.

Boxer
I have to agree with this one. We got our boxer about the same time as when our two year old was born. Yes, they are wild and crazy, but they are the most gentle dogs when it comes to young ones. He weighs 80 lbs now and lets our two year old ride him, lay on him, and play non stop.

Our boxer was great with our young kids.

Beagles are way more concerned with what their nose tells them than what kids are doing. Plus they can be really loud at inopportune times. And they have a hankering for dirty diapers that can be disgusting if you have a baby.

If an inside dog, you'll regret a shedding dog. Miniature Schnauzers are great inside dogs, along with poodles.

My barber here in KC has an Aussiedoodle…sweetest dog. They are supposedly great with kids.
I've heard of those. We met a couple who had one and he was very sweet. They are supposed to not shed as much as a regular Aussie, which would be a good thing. Aussies do shed.

I would think the bigger breeds are more tolerable with small children as much as they pull and tug on dogs. My French mastiff has been great with our two small kids plus he's protective with them and the entire house.

I’ve had a Great Dane, an Aussie mutt and a golden retriever. The Great Dane (god rest her soul) has been hands down the most gentle dog I’ve ever seen. My nieces and nephew would lay all over her and she just sat there and enjoyed the company.
The Aussie is also a very gentle dog but a little skiddish around strangers. Not fond of men mostly but takes some warming up to people in general.
The golden isn’t afraid of anyone. She will lick everyone to death regardless.

With our first child he would evade, now he just lays there and takes it.
He is annoyed but would never do anything.
He is also a ferocious protector of our house/yard with anyone he doesn’t know.
