I would stay out of major cities if possible. I prefer a community just large enough to support a variety of shopping, dining and entertainment, but with good public schools, reasonable traffic and low levels of pollution. Unfortunately, many jobs require you to subject yourself to the human ant hills.

Making a lot of money? San Diego, no question. It's an expensive city but it's amazing.

I liked living on the outskirts of Knoxville better. Have a better job in Chattanooga, so I moved here. If you like to sit on the internet all day, can't really beat Chattanooga unless you move to a Google Fiber city. Gig internet is cheaper by like $20 a month in google fiber areas.

We have more annoying hipsters in Chattanooga over Knoxville that like to rave about the downtown revival.

The ridgecut alone makes it not worth it.

Or if you like doing anything outdoors. Been voted best (or in the top 5) outdoor/climbing city by many magazines.

Downtown is flourishing. Northshore has continue to grow since the early 00's, and now the revitalization effort has moved to the Southside/Main St. area where there seems to be a new business or restaurant going up every month.

You are two hour drive from ATL, Bham, Nashville, and Knoxville.

Hiwassee and Ocoee Rivers are a day's drive for great white water rafting, camping, and hiking (though you can find plenty of hiking inside city limits).

The fast internet has helped grow the businesses in Chattanooga, and has attracted some new tech companies. But fast internet is probably not even in my top 10 of reasons I love Chattanooga.

Worst part of Chattanooga, and I never have to deal with it when I'm home. East Brainerd/Ooltewah are traps and the worst part of the city.

Downtown is in a constant state of flux. It's a constant stream of replacements waiting to fail.

I'd rather fish and visit the Smokies over the Hiwassee and Ocoee areas any day of the week, but I am not a rafter. Ocoee definitely has better rafting. I am out at both locations and the Smokies extremely often thanks to my job.

It's not a terrible city, but for a young person, there are much better choices that offer a lot more than what Chattanooga has to offer.

Coming from LA, I wouldn't move to NYC unless you lined up an OT baller job at a big firm making $100k+ right out of school. Anything less and you're lower middle class. Not only that but you'll get taxed out the wazoo no matter what income you have in NYC. NYC actually has it's own income tax. Between the wife and I we are paying close to $300/month just in NYC personal income tax. Also forget about buying property- most reasonable condos/houses start at 400k, and have property taxes that start around 10k/year. The math doesn't add up.

There are plenty of girls that live here though.

Ootlewah/Collegedale seems to be the only place that had a freakin clue on city planning and are the places sustaining the new growth in industry which is why Chattanooga is now annexing the frick out of it. The rest of the city is a mess of nice neighborhoods placed right on top of ghettos.

Been a Chattanoogan all my life, and there have been plenty of mainstays downtown.

The only one I can think of that is constanstly something different is Rio Picante/Tortilla Factory/Some burger bar across from the aquarium.

You're missing some great fishing on the Hiwassee. Trophy trout section with great fishing holes. My dad brings in a great haul of trout every weekend.

Plenty of good rapids as well, but yes, the Ocoee is better and more exciting for white water rafting. However, it's easier and cheaper to raft the Hiwassee.

To each his own. But Chattanooga has a low cost of living, plenty of outdoor options, and in close proximity to bigger cities. I find Chattanooga to be the perfect size. And it's just beautiful. I find it much more beautiful than Knoxville, but the surrounding areas of Knoxville can be just as pretty. All of East TN is pretty.
