What is 'Scromiting'? ER Doctors Are Seeing it More

Recreational cannabis use is now legal in 24 U.S. states. After Illinois legalized it, in 2020, James Swartz started to keep an eye out for any changes in public health that might stem from more widespread marijuana use. A professor of social work at the University of Chicago, he still remembers when he and his colleagues learned about the rise of a distressing condition that seemed linked to chronic marijuana usage. “We started seeing more and more clinical reports and case studies in the literature about this syndrome,” he says. “So we were curious: Is that happening here?”

They found that indeed, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS)—which can include a symptom colloquially called “scromiting,” a portmanteau of “screaming” and “vomiting”—seemed to be on the rise in emergency departments nationwide. In 2025, the condition even got its own ICD 10 code, allowing doctors to enter it more specifically into medical records. The condition is still poorly understood, and recently, physicians publishing in JAMA wrote a primer on the disorder.

What is cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS)?
An important backdrop to the rise of CHS is a condition called cyclic vomiting syndrome, or CVS, says Dr. Thangam Venkatesan, a professor at the Ohio State University who is an expert on CVS and an author of the new paper. “It has episodes of nausea, vomiting, belly pain, headache, and this affects both children and adults,” she says. During episodes, people vomit or retch four or five times an hour, and episodes can last several days, before abating for weeks or months. Understanding and avoiding triggers is key to treating the disorder.

I had this two Saturdays ago after a few too many bourbons at a Brewery concert.

You about to get down voted and argued with by the weed heads who claim weed is completely harmless.

what does daily alcohol deaths have to do with the subject in question?

Other than you trying desperately- and failing miserably- to defend weed.

So some people who have a panic attack from smoking high grade THC, go to an ER where they are also throwing up from a normally unrelated medical issue.

This article is deceiving because it's trying to make the reader think THC is causing the vomiting alone, not the underlying medical condition that already existed in the user.

I'm not saying this is not true but seriously, I have smoked acres of weed in my lifetime and not once has it caused me to scream and vomit. I wonder if those affected got ahold to some that was laced with something

We have some pretty good frequent fliers who refuse to kick the habit and keep coming back.

ICU admits because of the vomiting causing electrolyte disturbances and subsequent EKG abnormalities.

It is common enough to where the first question we generally ask the vomiting patient is if they smoke weed.

Zofran tends to not work for “scromiting”.

Is this this website's first ever use of the term, "portmanteau"?

ETA: No, it is not. Fr33manator uses it liberally, which is not surprising.

I guess I’m a weirdo but I expected something along the lines of scrotum omitting.

I've been down voted for talking about it here before, but it's absolutely real. Heavy thc use can disregulate your esophageal sphincter and cause the worst vomiting you've ever had. I went to the ER on two consecutive days for it. I had puked so many times that there was nothing left. I was dry heaving so hard that I was basically involuntarily screaming into my toilet bowl.

I thought my appendix had burst. The abdominal pain was so bad that they shot me up with morphine on both trips to the ER. I didn't believe them when they told me what it was, but they advised me to try a hot shower. Apparently relief from hot showers is more or less a diagnostic prereq for CHS. I gave it a shot and the relief was almost instant.

For context, I had just gotten back from Colorado and had apparently gone way overboard on the edibles. Back then I smoked every day and was no stranger to edibles either, so I stocked up and had fun. Everything I had taken came from dispos, so no, this wasn't spice or some sketchy delta-whatever product.

Pot-heads never like to hear this, but it's not an infallible wonder plant with zero risks. I still dabble and am in no way anti-weed, just offering personal experience since so many people believe CHS is some fake psyop from big tobacco or whatever.
