quote:See there is someone lying in this thread. I dont think you can just go tot he adoption agency and get a free kid.
I would love to be able to adopt a child but we can't afford the costs, or maybe the perceived costs. I don't understand why it has to be so expensive unless it has been decided that the more it costs the less likely the kid would be brought into another bad situation?

What? Is that how you interpreted my comment?

Don't see how you didn't AT THE VERY LEAST pay court cost or lawyer fees. Average adoption in LA is 25-35k. We were very lucky and didn't have to go through an agency. We will end up spending about 25k.

For private domestic infant adoption (birth mother relinquishment) you can adopt through an adoption agency or through an adoption lawyer. Adoption costs vary depending on birth mother expenses, including medical costs for the expectant woman, adoption agency/adoption attorney fees, travel, failed adoption matches, etc. The range for an adoption agency adoption is from $5,000 to $40,000+, with almost 60% falling within $10,000 – $30,000, and the average being around $28,000. Some adoption agencies have a sliding fee scale where adoption costs are based on your income.
The adoption cost averages for an independent adoption with an adoption lawyer are just slightly less than with an adoption agency, but that is likely because their numbers includes adoptions where the birth mother and adoptive family have found each other, and the adoption lawyer is simply finalizing the adoption. Also, some adoption attorneys do not provide as much pre-adoption education or post-adoption support, thus costing a little less than an adoption through an adoption agency.
If you are adopting through foster care, it cost little to nothing.

Correct, foster care adoption is different than a private adoption or going through an agency.

I'm the oldest of 9 kids. Two of my siblings were adopted. They grew up as well adjusted as the rest of us. My wife and I plan to adopt as well, Lord willing.
Adoption is an incredible gift for all involved. Would that it were more commonplace than abortion.

Because we adopted a foster child. I wasn't even considering private adoptions to be honest.

We plan on adopting within the next 5-7 years. We have 2 of our own, but there are so many that need love

I've adopted 2. One came from a broken home, dad died when she was 5 and mom is a drug addict that can barely read or write. She's a straight A student, about to be in gifted and never misses anything. I don't know how or where she gets her intelligence but it's a miracle considering her early childhood background.

I believe if you are willing and able to adopt, you should follow your conscience and adopt. I assume nurture would supercede nature.

What is OTs view on adoption?
My wife and I received two beautiful children yesterday. They are siblings and the oldest girl is 2 and the little brother is 10 months. We hope to adopt them and everything looks good. I never knew I could love something like I love these children. We have only had them for 24 hours and they mean the world to my wife and I.

My adoption cost was $3600 total. Private adoption, BM was a friend of a friend, called up a local attorney and he drew up the paperwork, $3000 for his fees $600 for the home study.
We had to make one appearance in front of the judge at the 2 month mark, and he said just send the paperwork to his office from now on and don't bother driving all the way over.
Easiest process I have ever experienced.

Lol. What a stupid, backwoods statement. Not surprising coming from you, though.

Congrats. Breaks my heart to see all these kids who have such terrible lives. I'd adopt 10 more if I could afford them.

Congrats
I was adopted as a baby. My birth mom was 16 at the time.
As a kid, there were certainly questions I wanted answered, but I never felt abandoned as the OP put it. I have since met my birth-mom and we are best friends.

That's awesome!!
We fear that our daughter will never be able to have any contact with her birth mom. We've kept tabs on her and it's clear that, other than apparently being clean, she still blames others for everything that's happened to her and hasn't taken responsibility for anything. And she made little to no effort fighting the TPR.

My little girl turns 2 in December. We were there for the birth and wife got to cut the cord (I wasn't allowed in the room, and gladly accepted that). I wouldn't change it for the world. As far as she knows I am her daddy and my wife is her momma. I always wondered what it would be like and if I could love a kid who wasn't mine biologically. That little girl is my world and I love her like she is my own.
She is YOUR OWN!!!! You need to start realizing that. You are her daddy and your wife is her momma and no one can change that. being a daddy is more than being biological. You will begin to see this as she gets older and begins to pick up on your personality, humor, and habits. It's all about nurture more than nature. My little girl and boy act just like me and it drives my wife crazy.
