Who gives a shite? It’s their freedom and ability to think freely, even if wrong.

Several years ago I saw an interview with this guy who would troll mostly right wing message boards, such as our lovable poli board.
He would do it as a gag, making up ridiculous BS with the hopes it would be a lesson (similar to the “Birds aren’t real” movement).
But he quickly found out most of it was believed and “liked,” and often spun into further conspiracies - sort of feeding on itself.
Anyway, it was a good lesson in just how gullible people are when they read something online, especially if it fits their political bias. This guy stopped because he started to feel guilty about it.

People think anything the disagree with is disinformation
Since they tend to stay in their own info silo
they thing anything contrary is "Fake News"
Don't know how or who started that.....no idea

If it gets more people to start questioning things they hear or read I'm ok with it. Especially things from the MSM.
I think AI is going to sow more distrust too.

It’s attention whoring.
I guess what’s missing is an ability to live without the validation of randoms.

On the subject of conspiracy theories. Here's the most credible conspiracy theory I've ever heard.
Because the Government can't exactly come right out and tell us a Zombie Apocalypse is either imminent or barely kept at bay. What they've cleverly done instead, through CIA fronted Hollywood Production Companies is educate us on how to survive it and inform us all on what the threats really are.
It's no accident or coincidence that almost every Zombie movie, show or story we've ever seen or read runs the same essential playbook, same essential theme and same essential Government response.
This began with George Romero (a known CIA propagandist) and has run all the way through The walking dead and the writings of Max Brooks. In fact, take note of Brooks' writings. He takes the subject matter very seriously and is openly educational. Almost as if it he was greenlit by the CIA to go ahead and write the final, definitive chapter in this decades long story. What else can the CIA possibly teach us that it hasn't already taught us?
Furthermore, Max Brooks does have direct connections to secret governmental operations. Mel Brooks (Max Brooks father) was a devout anti-communist and a known spy and Israeli agent. This later became one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood.
The fundamental point of this post is this. One, the CIA isn't all bad. The agency has gone to great lengths over the decades to prepare us as best it can without causing panic. And two...Somethings coming.

I understand the point if you are a government or a business or some other entity that has something to gain by swaying popular opinion...but just some regular ole baw sitting in his basement making up conspiracy theories or random disinformation...how empty are yall inside to feel like this gives you some satisfaction?
It appears to me that conspiracy theories drive a lot of business for that board.

there's this "local influencer" with a pretty big following in new orleans who lives in an inherited POS house and drives around in a POS truck and he has the answers to all of new orleans' (and the the world's) problems. i'll never understand how someone like that gets any sort of following.
Because I got answers, homeboy.

True but I also think that what a lot of people label as a conspiracy is really a confluence of interest. The difference between the two is a conspiracy takes overt planning whereas a confluence of interest is a group of people that act out of similar self motivation.

quote:
Who gives a shite if someone wants to type 2+2=5? It's just words and 99% of people can figure stuff out for themselves.
We all should. Why?
Back in the day, pre-internet, there were conspiracy theorists, nutjobs, pure nazis, pure communists, propagandists, and severely mentally impaired/paranoid people who would just blow your fricking mind if you sat down and conversed with them. Not blow your mind in a good way, either, rather "holy shite, this dude is way the frick out there" kind of blow your mind. These people were on the edges of society, often ignored and, correctly, chalked up as pure crackpots.
Now? We put megaphones in their faces and ask them to exclaim the craziest shite possible. Why? Because it brings in clicks and clicks bring in revenues. The crazier shite to come out of someone's mouth, the more clicks it generates. There are grifters all over this country, and world, who have caught on to this, which just compounds the problem.
The grifters understand how to best present conspiracies and disinformation. They understand they have to be just vague enough to leave room to be proven wrong. They ask unanswerable questions and draw tenuous connections between unrelated stories. They know they have to drive RAGE. And the more people they reach, it leads to more people who tune in, read, or click.
I think people underestimate just how awful a world without truth will be.

It's amazing how the MUH Russia hoax conspiracy theory was relentlessly promulgated by the holier than thou legacy media and their pundits and they still remain holier than thou like they are the final arbiters of truth.
But the distrust in the Legacy media is only growing and they are losing their narrative grip:

A lot of you posters pointing the finger at conspiracy theorist are the same people who believed the media and government lies about Russia, COVID, etc.
They were conspiracy theories, until they weren’t.
