A lot of you posters pointing the finger at conspiracy theorist are the same people who believed the media and government lies about Russia, COVID, etc.

They were conspiracy theories, until they weren’t.

They are the same people that believe right now, that an extra $60 billion to Ukraine and they can defeat Putin.

I'm not even talking about someone who is honestly trying to change minds and opinions about something true/real etc. I'm talking about people who create completely false information for no apparent gain or purpose.

That is simply a lack of maturity. An adjective often connected with that is sophomoric.

On the subject of conspiracy theories. Here's the most credible conspiracy theory I've ever heard.

Since you brought up conspiracy theories and the CIA, they are the ones that coined the term "conspiracy theory" to ridicule those that would question them.

What a stupid comment. So make up some complete bullshite to scare old/dumb gullible people, even if it's a complete fabrication?? You need your brain examined.

It's a grift, man.

You don't strike me as a man who listens to Charlie Kirk, Alex Jones, or Lara Loomer. Many people do. When you step onto the poliboard and read the utter nonsense that is typed by normal, every day people on that board, you don't really believe these people just come up with these ideas spontaneously, right? There's an entire media apparatus built upon disinformation and rage. Those who become hooked on that media, propagate those ideas to their family, their peers, even to perfect strangers. Disinformation spreads like a virus, especially in today's media environment. I mean, hell, just read this thread.....even in here, 2-3 pages in, folks are talking about COVID and Russia.

Elon Musk puts some conspiracy out on Twitter and gets hundreds of thousands of likes and retweets. The shite spreads like wildire within hours. Potentially millions of people now take something Elon said as fact, despite it being easily refutable.

It's more than a lack of maturity...it's technology beating the everloving shite out of the slow pace of government regulation.

How do you define "disinformation" and what do you consider a good, reliable source of information?

It's amazing how the MUH Russia hoax conspiracy theory was relentlessly promulgated

The dossier was never intended to be fact, it was raw intelligence gathering. You're right, the media ran with it and a lot of people believed everything in it. These people are idiots, as are the folks in media who took everything in it as fact.

Russia did interfere in the US elections in 2016. This has been vetted in court, by Mueller, people have gone to jail.

And the way you counteract information you deem as mal, mis or disinformation is more information. Not less.

but just some regular ole baw sitting in his basement making up conspiracy theories or random disinformation

There's people who genuinely believe what they're saying. Some who are trolling. Some who are engagement farming on twitter for cash. Some do it for humor. A microscopic sliver are bad actors trying to mislead for some bigger cause. I'm not sure which of these your post is referring to.

I tend to think if you're too lazy or unintelligent to vet information from random internet posters, that's on you. The term "grain of salt" comes to mind.

You're right. But how many people read something on Twitter or hear Charlie Kirk say something and take the time to verify it's legitimacy? Very few.

there's this "local influencer" with a pretty big following in new orleans who lives in an inherited POS house and drives around in a POS truck and he has the answers to all of new orleans' (and the the world's) problems. i'll never understand how someone like that gets any sort of following

I know who you're talking about.

He is a Teedy apoligist and always blames the "Republicans in BR" for all the city's problems.

He made a claim about New Orleans tourism dollars subsidizing the state "MAGA area's" budget and a white guy pointed out that Orleans parish took in more revenue than it produced. The guy got called a racist and was blocked from commenting.

Yeah, those FaceBook posts really put Trump over the top in 2016.
