Yeah, movies and gas stations are in the same boat.

Not sure how “secret”, but

The people that have the most positive impact on public schools are parents and individual teachers.

Lawyers and elected officials can have the most negative impact.

Superintendents and administrators are insanely overpaid and most districts have bloated bureaucracies. Why? Because they are required to do so much dumb shite by the lawyers and politicians.

It might have changed because I think their are some items they make $0 profit on, but others they do make a profit, but they are able to sell at a cheaper price because they buy directly from the manufacture and store also serves as the warehouse so there is no need for to have anyone to go check in the back to see if they have anymore, etc.

Gas stations barely make any profit off gas except rural ones with little traffic. Gas is to get them in the store and buy drinks, cigs, snacks. That’s why small town gas stations have much higher gas prices, they don’t get the traffic to sell the gas barely above cost

External audits of financial statements of trillion and billion dollar companies are largely worked on by 23 year old kids fresh out of college

I mean, that’s kinda the point. By the time anything gets to an auditor, there would have been several layers of internal audits and reviews and controls put into place.

If some pothead auditor finds an issue, you’ve made many many mistakes along the way which is why companies find audits to be rather annoying.it means all the money they spent before that point was not used effectively.

I had a manager years ago that loved audits though. She found them helpul resource to build her case towards t objectives to senior management and found their insights useful

This is so stupid. You realize it's a public company, and you can look at their financial statements, right? Why don't you take 10-20 mins to do so, so that you can realize how dumb your statement was?

Most don’t know the catfish industry holds the record for consecutive years of growth of any U.S. industry in history. It grew in acreage and revenue/sales every year from the early 60s until 2003. The amount of money that flooded into it was unreal. People used to drive down from cities like New York and drive around the delta looking for people building ponds and stop and ask if they needed investments. The money led to incredible stories of huge parties, private planes, sports cars, illegal casinos, strippers, murders. Farmers drove Lincoln’s and Cadillacs on the ponds instead of trucks. Imagine a bunch of broke rednecks becoming millionaires almost overnight

The stories would make an incredible Martin Scorsese movie on par with Casino and Wolf of Wall St. But you’ll never get the people to tell it all, most aren’t alive anymore. But there’s stuff people took to their grave that will never be told. The book Catfish Days tells a little of it but not the juiciest stuff

The most profitable part of a car dealership is service and parts. They make money on cars but most of the profitability is due to service. That's why so many smaller dealerships went away. You have to have a dealership with a dozen service bays or so to make money and get people in and out. An oil change and routine maintenance and repairs.

Selling you a car is about getting you to keep coming back for service and repairs.

Microsoft maintains the functionality in new versions of its products, but they move things around and change keyboard shortcuts to justify new training curriculum. Why? Because Microsoft-certified training facilities pay a massive royalty to be Microsoft-certified. It’s a huge revenue stream for Microsoft.

Oracle is the best in the world at creating gotcha situations with regards to licensing. Audit findings and subsequent fines are a huge revenue stream for Oracle. It’s a considerable percentage of their annual revenue. You can easily become a hostage rather than a customer if you don’t understand their game.

One surefire way to convince me not to use the dealer service center is to play games when I'm interested in buying a car.

Who gets their oil changed at a car dealership, or 90% of the maintenance required, unless it’s free in your warranty? I’ve yet to pay for anything at a dealership.

All industries float on a sea of bullshite, but the liquor industry might be the bullshittiest of all. I watch all the threads on these boards waxing poetic (and supposedly knowledgeable) about all the differences drinkers ascertain from different bottles and varieties and laugh at all the certainty people think they have over detectable differences.

In fact, the industry is MUCH closer to the Simpsons Duff production line:

...than to some highly refined and differentiated product offering.
