The Germans had no means of delivering an atomic bomb to North America. Not even close. And after mid 1944, they could not deliver such a weapon to Moscow either. Their only option would be London.

But even there it would be a struggle. The first atomic bombs weighed almost 10,000 lbs. The V2 could only carry a 2,000 lb warhead, so it would not work. And German bombers were no better of and option. Really the HE-177 was the only viable option.

Don't have Netflix. Read that somewhere and also saw a documentary on the History Channel (back before it was all aliens and dreck) on the B29.

I knew an old German guy who was an early teen at the end of the war. He had lived in the US since the 80s. He was talking about illegal immigrants and said "I know who could fix this." I asked who? He said "The man with the mustache." Sent a chill up my spine.

The difference is Japan was at war with a country, namely the United States of America, with the economic and industrial capability to develop something like the B-29 Superfortress. Germany could not come close to such a feat.

As big of a program as the Manhattan Project was, the development and deployment of the B-29 was even bigger. In fact, the US spent more developing the B-29 than they did developing the atomic bomb.

Like I said above, developing and producing an atomic bomb was only one half of the equation. You also had to develop and produce the delivery system for the bomb to be of any use.

They had no delivery vehicle either. The ocean is a great buffer there too.

Luckily they didn’t. Now, the world is safe for trans rights, drag queen story time, and discrimination against evil white people. Thank god the good guys won!

Exactly right.

Which is why I was making fun of the ocean buffer explanation

They would have eventually put one on a rocket.

Even when the war ended in May 1945, Germany was nowhere near to developing a rocket with sufficient payload to deliver an atomic bomb. As I said earlier, the V2 could only carry a 2,000 lb warhead. The Germans would have to develop and produce a rocket with five times that payload to have one capable of delivering an atomic bomb. And in May, 1945, even London was now outside the range of the V2 due to German territory being captured in both the East and West.

Goering and others wouldn’t have been big fans of turning historical cities into dust.

Our country was less than 200 years old during WW2. Were they really considered “historical” to Europeans?

Little known fact: the development of the B29 Super Fortress cost more than the development of the bomb.

I don't believe this.

What are you including in their respective "developments?"

I don't think they had a military need to either.

Fortunately, their leaders weren't convinced investing in atomic weapons was worth it. And they had a lab accident that pretty much torpedoed their efforts.

OTOH, if they really invested in its development I doubt they would have been incapable of finding a delivery system for it.

Perhaps a Kamikaze mission to NY harbor on a UBoat. But, that would have low probability of success.
