Amelia Earhardt...she didn't even accomplish what she set out to do but still gets discussed all the time....

Kurt Cobain is probably the real answer though.

music fans overrating their favorite dead musician.

Buddy Holly.
Big Bopper (DJ) and Richie Valens died in a plane in a thunderstorm when I was in high school.

Don't go there. James Dean was awesome!

I'll nominate River Phoenix.

Cobain

Nirvana sucked. Alice in Chains and Sound Garden were the better bands out of that Seattle grunge scene.

JFK not so much.

His military service, along with what he was able to accomplish in such a short life is incredibly impressive.

Also his, along with his brother's, resolve to stand up for what they knew was right at the time makes them an example to all men on standing your ground.

Now, even I'll admit he was a terrible womanizer, and few realize how badly he treated his wife and the private hell she went through dealing with his transgressions all the way up to his death.

But no one in history is perfect; if we are to focus solely on the misdeeds of any historical figure, then let's go ahead and take down every monument, statue, and building raised in the honor of someone.

Trayvon. He was a thief, drug user, vandal, and had been in more fights than Connor Mcgregor. He would have been lucky to finish high school.

As his legend grows he has been turned into a good boy, a great son, and a wonderful sibling. Hell, they made the boy a pilot last week because he once said he likes airplanes.

Next thing you know, he will be a nought nought spy, or a big time Hollywood movie producer.

The legend grows.

Another great one. I was telling a guy at the gym just last night how I thought he was overrated.

I had all if Mitch's albums when he was still alive. He was my favorite comedian then. So I don't see how he can be overrated because of a death. He may be overrated to you, but it has nothing to do with his death.
