What has been the most outrageous quote you've received?

I had a guy down the street from me clean my chimney in 2019. It was $200 cash.
In 2020 he wanted $800. I said why is it now $800? He said “Covid” lol I hung up

$10,000 or so for a fence in my backyard. It was at the height of the lumber shortage.

$800 to fix a 3x3” hole in sheetrock
I had a guy that replaced carpet in two rooms with laminate and painted my entire 1100 sq ft rent house for $800. I just paid for the materials

I’ve never understood the point of a pergola.

I learned a long time ago when initiating a quote process to ask up front if the company does most of its business in individual residential or commercial/complex residential. If the latter, it means they have no desire to take on your measly home project at fair rates and will give you an outrageous quote so you will leave them alone, or be stupid enough to actually pay it.

quote:
31k for the "top of line" AC replacement. One Hour air conditioning obviously.
Accutemp gave me a $21k quote to replace one of my units. Next guy, $11k.

Took my car to a different Toyota dealer to get oil changed and alternator replaced because my independent shop was booked for a week so they ran ‘diagnostics’ on it and told me with a straight face I needed $9,000 worth of work done on a 20 year old Camry with 130,000 miles on it
I told them to change the oil only. Took it to the independent mechanic and he said other than alternator nothing was wrong with it.

$287,000 to add 10 feet to two existing work restrooms and add a single stall in each. Would need to redo flooring and sinks but it's the most ridiculous quote I have ever gotten. Had another contractor come it at $180,000 and I still can't pull the trigger. This is a $60,000 job max.

. I got multiple quotes for a driveway. These guys pull up in brand new 80k trucks.
I don't understand. Are they suppose to be poor and drive 20yr old clapped out 1/2tons?

$400,000 for a 12’ x 40’ addition (indoor/outdoor kitchen). I don’t think the builder wanted the business.

If you live in a nice neighborhood, expect higher quotes for the same work in a less expensive neighborhood.
Where I live I call it the “Highland Road Price”.
If you notice when you call for a quote, the first thing they ask you is where do you live. I dread saying it.

$950 to change an ac condenser motor. Part online is $200.
Ended up not even needing the motor, two wires had rubbed together causing it to not run. Fixed the wires and back running now.

My mom got (and accepted) a $40K quote for a new asphalt shingle roof for her 2,000 sq ft, single story retirement house.
Needless to say, I had to step in and fix that problem. Wildest shite I’ve ever heard.
