when they get injured, broken bones, need a tooth pulled, need surgery/chemo etc? Or if there's a death in the family? Do they get to go to a hospital? Do they get to go to a funeral if their parent/ S.O., child, or sibling die?

depends on their "risk"
But, inmates are taking to hospitals or parish health units

i wouldn't think that they are barred from receiving medical care

Yes, they go to the hospital.
Whether they’re allowed to attend funerals depends on their conviction, good behavior, or possibly the whim of the people in charge.

When I was in the military, we would escort people in the brig to and from medical appointments. They had a basic nurse on staff at the brig, but for any more complicated procedure 2 Marines would escort them in handcuffs.

If their needs can't be met in the prison infirmary they go to an offsite hospital with an escort (or multiple). And no you do not get out to go to funerals. I'd imagine you'd have to get very special permission to attend something like that.

They do under guard, unless they are some real violent offender. I don't know what the process is for this to happen, but I know it does happen.

No on funeral
Medical is case by case but most jails have a medical staff that can handle most of your list
Cost to taxpayer is outrageous for inmate medical

If one of their parents pass away, they have to stay in the box until after the funeral. That way they won't turn rabbit and run.

The short answer is yes, they get healthcare. There are a lot of companies that provide healthcare services to inmates. They keep doctors/nurse practitioners/PA's in facility to manage Diabetes, blood pressure, etc.....
When crap gets bad or out of their realm of expertise they will send the inmate to whatever specialty is needed.
I work at an Eye Hospital that does a ton of eye surgery. Saw an inmate today that came in for cataract surgery.

Most prisons have a full time dentist, physicians, nurses onsite, and a infirmary that can treat basic health problems and do X-Rays. More serious problems are transferred to area hospitals. Funerals, no idea.

I was at a doctors apt a few months when two sheriffs deputies brought in a shackled prisoner. I always assumed there was a prison or jail doctor, but evidently not.
I think funerals depends on the level of security risk and is taken on a case by case basis.

I scan prisoners from time to time and we do surgery on them here at the hospital. Most of the time they go to the charity hospitals though

There is a medical facility in pretty much all parish jails and all state prisons but, for the most part, it's just a first line of care deal. If they have something else, they are sent out.

They are afforded necessary medical care, including cancer treatment.
Except under extreme circumstances they are not allowed to attend off site services (funerals etc.)

This/\
A couple years ago one of my sister-in-laws relatives died and the lady had a son who was in county jail for drug possession and distribution. He did get to attend her funeral for a few minutes, but did so under supervision of 2 armed guards and he was dressed in the
jail garb, handcuffed and shackled at the ankles.
He lost the only person who still had faith in him to turn his life around and that incident was the catalyst for him to get his shite together and go straight. Too bad his mother didn't live to see that day, but she was instrumental in him getting there eventually.

I will say it is rare; in my 11 years at my present position, I've only heard of four or five cases where an inmate from a state facility has been able to attend the funeral of a parent; and you are right about them being cuffed, shackled, and in jail garb under armed guard when they attend. But it can be done.

Angola has a full fledged clinic inside including Physician, nurse, and x-ray 24/7/365 (If I remember correctly it's 72 hr. rotations, 3 days in, 3 days out). There's civilian housing maintained, cleaned, staffed, by prisoners at Angola.
The prisoners don't usually mess with the med staff. Of course the insane ones may from time to time as crazy does. Rest of the inmates are smart enough not to bite the hand that feeds them.
