I can respect a good rendition of it in certain times(Whitney Houston’s before the Super Bowl years ago for example), but otherwise it’s just a song that doesn’t stir up much in me.

It meant in 1931 our country was doing super shitty with the great depression, so our government... like some other governments in the 1930s, decided to really lay the propaganda on thick. Now we have a national anthem. Within the decade we'd even have a pledge of allegiance, written by a full blown socialist.

Honestly it’s a shitty song that most people can’t sing very well and half of America doesn’t even understand. Why does it need to be played at sporting events to begin with?

I prefer the national anthem to the pledge of allegiance. I don't like bending the knee.

I believe that Americans should kneel during the Pledge of Allegiance, reflect on the meaning of the Pledge and stand and sing for the National Anthem in sporting events. The National Anthem represents pride in freedom, a song that expresses that Americans are willing to fight and die for the country they love and for the idea of freedom.
It's a fundamental right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
The Pledge of Allegiance is literally bending the knee to whichever "representative" government is currently elected, wether Democrat or Republican. It's a two party system that represents no American fully. I am an independant. I do not believe in bending the knee to anyone.
And yes, I advocate for the legalization of marijuana as a sure shot remedy to the current protests destroying our country, but that in itself is not a crime.

The honest truth here by reading these replies is that the new generation has no clue to what it took and the sacrifices made by people before them for this country. The education system in the US has FAILED because the history means nothing anymore. It’s like we are here because we are here now with people.The national anthem is a reflection of ONE nation under god not one group of individuals but NOPE individualism is what it’s about now Take a knee while it’s played. Just sad. As a veteran it pisses me off that we have gotten to this point but hopefully we can try and make it back to where we were.

God is not mentioned 1 time in the (first verse of the) National Anthem. And this is coming from a Christian. However, if that's what it means to you as an American, great.
As I said earlier, both the Anthem and Flag are SYMBOLS of our country. They are not what makes it great. It's hard to get folks to fight and die of a piece of paper. When you signed up, did you make an oath to defend the national anthem or the Constitution?

I've always been way more of a questioner of authority and tradition than a team player. The song doesn't mean anything to me. They're just words and notes written at a time in our nation's teenage years. The ritual of it is even more bizarre to me. Same with the pledge of allegiance. Just always found it creepy.

I'd argue the opposite. With the amount of information available to my generation, we are able to truly see the good and bad of our history. The good is certainly worth celebrating, but the bad is still a weight on our soul and should give us motivation to do better.
