St. George

Already was great

He became one of the most venerated saints and megalo-martyrs in Christianity, and he has been especially venerated as a military saint since the Crusades.

Ultimately it's going to save the parish. A better school system will slow down the Ascension/Livingston exodus. If it's somehow crushed through lawsuits or other nefarious means, flight from this parish is going to continue. In fact, I'd bet that it will increase dramatically. I know more than a few people who were holding out hope on St G to remain in EBR.

So you're welcome, East Baton Rouge Parish.

Sincerely,
Your Glorious Savior City of St George

I support the guys in the St. George effort. I do think it will be better for them. But I don't buy all the rainbow and unicorn. I don't think St. George will have this great leadership and so much money they won't know what to spend it on.

I think they will need to raise property taxes then once and ISD is established another increase in property taxes, and from what I gather it'll be a long shot as the entire parish gets to vote on it and this forming of St. George has been a blood bath.

LA is already high enough for taxes, residents need to pay state income tax then now raise property taxes as well? I guess will depend on how much.

Zachary will probably be raising their property taxes next year as the schools had to dip into rainy day funds to fund them as businesses left.

SG will be as good as people make it.
Initially there will be a surplus. What people go from there is important.

Very little of the SG revenues come from property taxes. Very little of BR’s revenues comes from property taxes.

The lion’s share of property taxes in EBR parish goes to support schools, independent agencies (Library, BREC, COA, EMS, MAEC, etc.).

SG isn’t looking at property taxes for city revenues.

The ISD when successful will be funded primarily through existing property taxes and existing sales tax. Whether or not taxes have to be raised depends on two big things.

The specific area included in the ISD and how many students it will draw initially and then in time.

Wealthy people Helping out their fellow man out of compassion is wonderful.

Wealthy people being forced to pay for politicians buying votes, failed/poorly planned initiatives, and slush funds for a city they actually never belonged to is a waste of money.

Just out of curiosity, what are the biggest wastes in how city-parish money collected from the SG area was being spent?

Most of the big infrastructure improvement projects were done in the SG area and they pay less for better services than Livingston Parish does.

Kip Holden basically neglected the north side of the parish and focused on downtown and South BR.

Most of the big infrastructure improvements are not in SG.
And I can’t speak to Livingston Parish services, but exactly what services do you think we get in SG that’s so good and so cheap?

We aren’t expecting some kind of renaissance here. We just want the basic COMPETENCY that we see in communities all over the country. You know, average to good schools, decent zoning laws, effective law enforcement, low ratio of St George employee to tax dollar, responsive government, etc. It’s not like we want anything unreasonable here. Just competent and responsive government.
