Nothing would happen. At least not if its a slow transition, which all estimates appears it will be. Conflict and strife over resources comes not from scarcity in itself but from the rate at which scarcity takes place. Change is only hard if it occurs at a rate beyond our ability to adapt.

As petroleum oil becomes harder and harder to extract due to shallow and easily accessible honey pots being exhausted the price will rise accordingly and apply price pressures to the market and force manufacturers and the consuming public to look for alternatives. As the alternatives become widespread and accepted and as industries are built around these new sources, then the price of oil will actually reverse from peak as demand dwindles. As technologically and economically advanced as humans are at this point in history I could see a scenario where the price of oil becomes so low due to energy competition, that petroleum reserves are abandoned. Remember that at this point the oil will be so deep and hard to reach that drilling it will become economically insolvent with the slightest bit of market pressure.

Alternatives. Not even considering wind, geotherm, nuclear, solar, etc for charging battery powered cars and dont forget hydrogen fuel cells that split fricking water. Oil is everywhere. Petroleum isnt the only source of oil. Early motorbikes and cars ran off of biodiesel and alcohol. That means that we dont even need to all go out and buy electric cars for this transition to take place. Our existing internal combustion engines can work now. I have 3 cars and a boat in my driveway right now. 2 of them and the boat can run off of 100% alcohol(ethanol) if need be. Ethanol is literally just running a still. The country of Brazil runs almost 100% of their domestic vehicles off of ethanol distilled from sugar cane. Louisiana wont even be affected by the loss of the petroleum industry because its one of the few states in the US that has the conditions to grow sugar cane as well as the infrastructure and experience. It would be even better for the average Louisianian than petroleum because the petro dollars mostly go to fat cat foreign corporations not the people like farming does/would.

Biodiesel is just a matter of converting rye, switchgrass and other ag products to oil. Its done now all the time. Peoples backyards even.

Plastics can be made from bio sources as well. Its been done already.

the world just goes back to wood burning steam power machines for everything industrial and power generating needs

NONE of these "green" power sources really work in any practical form. solar does the most to try to fill our needs and could charge batteries for night time lighting needs but beyond that its just not going to provide the level of power people use today. if you treated it like you had to to make due then it would be ok for household needs (no a/c systems) then people "could" get used to it, but to provide the power people use today if they want a/c systems running then every house will need a steam powered generator for making electricity

We would exponentially increase capital in R&D to find a new energy resource, preferably renewable.

Oh this should be neither biased, nor sensational

Famine, disease, initially significantly greater pollution as coal would be strip mines and burned without abandon. The cost of everything would go up and China's economy would take a larger hit than a lot of countries as they Rely on exporting goods a lot more than some other places. War would happen but without oil, you're looking at massive ground troops. There would be a shite ton of manual labor jobs back on the market, particularly in agriculture, but overall the quality of life for the average person would deteriorate considerably

Checks out. I think you missed a few plagues from the Book of Revelations.

Do you think wars would take place where countries would try to grab as much as they can to fuel their own country's interest?

That's happened many times already. Surely you don't think the US launched Desert Storm to fight for the freedom of poor Kuwaitis?

And synthetic fuels have been around for a long time. Nazi Germany used it quite a bit but it's still around. Here is the wiki.

The U.S. would be king because we have all of the natural gas and coal.

The developing world would run their power plants off of coal (as they do now), cars would run off of LNG, and the first world would use a combination of nuclear and coal to power their power plants.

Not much would change if it were a gradual transition.

Growing food instead of manicured lawns? You do realize most people are lazy fricks that will not do what is necessary to have a garden. Who is gonna protect your "garden"? I guarantee your shite is gonna get picked before u pick it. What about all the fertilizer and pesticide runoff? Most people over spray everything.

I have a 2.5 acre garden at the farm. Plus I usually have another 5 acres in a pea patch and 6 acres of silver queen corn.

When it starts producing I cannot keep up with the canning. I probably give away 50-60%. I only plant so much because I have the room and if something gets bugs or something I have enough else to keep my busy.

People don't realize just how much a person can grown in a garden.
