Looking down at your phone and swerving, even once, is careless operation. The driver is breaking several laws and is putting others lives in danger. I don't go around calling 911 every time someone veers into my lane but the OP specifically said they were swerving all over the road and driving like an a-hole.

Last football season we were on our way home on a Friday night after my son's game and got behind someone who was totally hammered. This was about 10:00 PM or so on a two lane road just outside of Guntersville, AL and they were in a Chrysler Pacifica. They'd go from 35 MPG to 70 MPH. They could not come close to holding a lane and came close to taking out several mailboxes and almost sides-wipped oncoming traffic several times.

We finally got a good long stretch of straight road where I felt comfortable enough to get up close enough so my wife (who was already on the phone with 911) could give them the tag number. About a mile or so after that they turned off onto a narrow side road, almost putting it a ditch in the process. What happened to them after that, I have no idea. I really wanted the stupid fricker to run off into a ditch.

I once had a guy in my neighborhood arrested for DUI. Talk about awkward dog walks.

OK, hold on a sec. I say that I wouldn't call 911 unless I was sure they were a danger. You ask me...

Why? Reckless driving is still dangerous without alcohol.

Then you say...

umm...call the cops. Don't even care if they're drunk, if they are a danger to others I'd call. I actually had this experience for the first time a while back.

I do it all the time. frick someone drunk, texting or just generally not driving correctly. Dangerous driving is just that no matter what the reason.

And if for some reason you just flip me off - I call and tell them you're drunk and give them your tag number and say "driving like a mad man-swerving, weaving, ran an old lady off the road, probably at least 100 mph plus."

Yeah. Don't flip me off.

I would call the cops on a relative if I thought they were DUI. I don't tolerate that shite, especially in my case where this douche was driving into my neighborhood drunk.

Call 911 but be sure they are truly dangerous. If the driver crossed the centerline once that isn't really a good enough reason.

If someone crosses the line once, I assume they were paying attention to something else then hurried up and grabbed the wheel or something. If someone is swerving, speeding up, hitting breaks, etc then I am going to make the effort to report it.

I called the police on someone for a DUI on my way to work one morning at 7:30-8am. I followed them for probably 6 miles and finally had to turn to work and lost them, I had a meeting and I believe I gave them the plate.

We were in a two lane road and he had crossed the center line multiple times, swerved insanely irradically multiple times, and got both tires off into the median multiple times. No idea whatever happened to him, I was pissed I couldn't follow him but I was on the phone with the cops for almost 10 minutes. At some point its on them.

I've had this happen to me, the sad part is multiple drivers reported this guy and we were coming up on a state line, the cop let him cross.

I called back to the state police headquarters and was furious, they said he looked fine to them. I was so pissed because not only did multiple drivers report it to 911, but you always see the signs that says to report them. Kind of like hey we're 10 miles from the next state, I'm too lazy not my problem.

I would call it in.

Just yesterday some guy put his car in the ditch directly in front of our office at 11AM. Guy just swerved off the road luckily didn't anyone. We watched the trooper give a field sobriety test and laughed hysterically as the guy was falling over.

My buddy and I were driving down the highway one day. There was a truck swerving a little bit. And going about 10 under the speed limit. We just went around him.. Didn't think much about it. We kept going. We were doing 60 in a 55. We were driving for about 5 minutes when we saw headlights approaching. They were gaining on us, which we didn't think much of because everyone does 70+ down there. Next thing we know BAM. He hit us going over 100. We flew off the road and my buddy didn't make it. Seatbelt and airbag saved mine. And the shite bag that hit us miraculously survived. With major injuries of course. I'd never wish harm on anyone, but karmas a bitch huh? But he was extremely intoxicated and did some cocaine. shite shakes you up and if I could go back, I'd dial 911 in a heartbeat. My life hasn't been the same.

You can't really be having this much trouble following. Veering into another lane can be caused by several things that aren't the drivers fault, like wind or poor roads. Again, the OP stated excessive swerving and you mentioned looking down at a phone.

Use common sense.

I call the police every time.

I'm not normally one to bail someone out of their own stupidity, but exceptions are made in this case.
