well thats why they think they are middle class
when you constantly compare yourself to the people that you think are more successful than you, you think that those people are upper class and I can't be since they have more than me
we rarely compare ourselves to people that we perceive to have less than us

Aren't those the guys who call everyone "poors" here on the OT?

Of course they don't. Most people never leave the US. And the ones that do usually stay in upscale resort locations for their two week "vacay".

Bingo. You will never find contentment and happiness in life if you constantly compare yourself to someone who has more than you.
There will always be someone bigger, stronger, faster, more wealthy than you. Be grateful for what you do have and be content with your lot. The downside could always be far worse.

Living for several years in a few third world countries will make you appreciate what you have here in the US real fricking quick.
Most people don't realize that making $35k a year puts you in the top 1% of earners on this planet.
And we have people here bitching that they have trouble living off of 100k a year

As a single guy, I consider myself "poor", although I technically make more than a middle class family of four, because I have student loan debt.

What makes the argument even dumber is that a married couple in most urban cities can live pretty nicely for less than $120k

If you can’t make it with $100k in Louisiana, you have a serious spending problems.

We talking just married couples now? Because the thread was a family of 4.

It really is.
My dad was an operator and eventually moved into management. He made more than I do right now 30 years ago but he had to work a shite ton of OT. My grandfather moved to Saudi Arabia in the late 70s because he wanted more.
We lived in my grandparents house until I was in 5th grade and then my dad bought a house outside of town for like 140k in the mid 90s. It was a perfectly fine house and much of the time we didn't have cable, internet..yea right, new vehicle all the time...yea right etc etc etc. He was a single dad so wasn't two incomes. Yea we had it great, but I look back and realize we didn't spend money crazy like people do now.
For vacation we might go to astroworld on a Saturday. We went on 2 real vacations thru high school. One to the beach and one to the mountains.
We owned an aluminum boat and had a deer camp. Want a vacation, go to the dear camp. We didn't waste money on stupid shite.
People now want all of the things a rich person wants line I described, but wonder why they need so much more money to live.
Let's say you make 100k. Take home is 60k after taxes, insurance, 401k etc
Let's say you have just the essentials and cut back on everything.
House 200k- $1250/month
Utilities- $300/month
Car note-$400/month
Gas-$250/month
Car insurance-$150/month
Groceries- $600/month
So the essentials cost $~3k a month. Take home is $5k. So you have $2k left.
The above is very doable, especially in the South and LA in particular. Now only have one car in the above scenario but let's say you add another, that still leaves $1200-$1300 left each month. Put 400 away each month and you still have 800 or so for entertainment.
Problem is people want the following budget
House 200k- $1750/month
Utilities- $500/month
Car note-$1200/month
Gas-$400/month
Car insurance-$250/month
Groceries- $800/month
Which puts it at 4900 spent per month. Now that only leaves 100 a month for eating out or entertainment and no money for saving. Bottom line is these are the people that complain. They want more than they should reasonably be able to afford.

even a family of 4 should be able to live comfortably on $120k in 99% of the US

Please stop making sense with math. Thanks.

It's absolutely flooring how many people are making 75k and driving around in 50k vehicles or living in houses 3.5 X their annual income.

Yeah and a married couple would have pretty much a life of luxury, which was my point.

This gives me anxiety to think about. I pretty much reject the "keeping up" culture.

Yep. Just because they'll lend you the money doesn't mean you can really afford it.

Me too. My wife and I make pretty decent money but we live below our means for the most part. She drives a 9 yr old car that's paid for. I have a basic used truck that we financed for 3 years. It will be paid off before it has 40k miles. Our house cost 1.2x our gross annual income.
