Work until you can’t physically anymore. Then you moved into a nursing home.

Still that way in many Latin American countries. Just like the Walton’s.

I will say it would be harder to do that in modern America because we are really good at keeping sick people alive. So taking care of grandma gets more complicated.

Red beans and rice with a little sausage is under a buck a serving if you buy bulk. I doubt pet food is that cheap.

This is the answer. My mom didn’t save or plan for anything. Went bankrupt in ‘08 when the real estate market crashed. Moved her into a house I bought. She’s been there ever since. Rent free and balling on her SS. Truly an example of what NOT to do in almost every conceivable way. Doing my best to do the opposite of everything she’s done.

Sounds like she raised a successful child, so you may not want to do opposite of that.

Work until you do.

And stop pissing your money away on crap to makes you think you’re wealthy.

Many of the jobs younger folks used to do are now being staffed by older people.

Old folks returning to work.

As someone thar has a dog and a cat, I can confirm that is an internet rumor because dog and cat food is actually kind of expensive.

Seems like living off of peanut butter and jelly or Spam would be cheaper.

I know $1 menus are kind of dead post-Covid, but back in my day you could eat off the dollar menu and get a lot more caloric bang for your buck compared to dog food. The old $1 double cheeseburger from McDonalds may have been the best macro:$ in history

Not me baby i'm working until the heart and the mind aren't. I already have the mindset that i'm a worker bee and the company(fingers crossed) email will go out that flobsever died at his desk at age of 83. I figure that's the day i make the final payment on the house. Then my kids will rejoice and finally have enough money to move out or stay at the house since they have already been there for 40 years. Living the dream baby!

They keep working. It sucks both ways.

- People have to keep working well past retirement age instead of enjoying this part of their lives
- because these people are still in the workforce, it prevents younger people from moving into those positions and advancing.

They, and their advocates in Congress, will be looking with envy at your retirement accounts.
Absolutely passes me off how little Repubs got done with total control of DC. Instead of solidifying gun rights and codifying laws keeping them out of our retirement accounts they were too busy playing tiddlywinks with that whimp Paul Ryan and the bitter old Arizona senator - both more worried about playing nice with the media than getting actual work done.

I'll never retire in my 50s because they aren't that far away. Having kids in my 20s busted that possibility. Currently shooting for 62. 16 years and 4 months to go

This is one of the complaints about our system. People that worked their entire lives subsisting at a lower level than the lifetime porch sitters. Of course they are (D)ifferent.

My grandad retired in ‘09. No debt. His SS, my grandmothers SS, and his pension totaled ~$2,500/month. In south MS that was plenty.

He fished his little heart out. Never missed an event with for his grandkids.

But to be fair… His idea of splurging was taking a trip to Hardee’s every week day to get a sausage biscuit, a coffee, and shoot the shite with the other retirees. He passed in ‘19.

Taught me one thing. Man worked 65 years for 10 of his own in retirement. Im blessed that I do well for myself. I’m hanging it up at 55 come hell or high water.
