I have an uncle that worked in the oil industry when I was a kid and they always had the nice houses, cars, swimming pools, toys, video games, etc. I thought they were rich and always wanted what they had. He always told my dad that he could easily get him a job making what he made. I wouldn't have thought twice about my dad working away.
Now, I appreciate my dad being home every night. My uncle doesn't really have a relationship with his kids, never has any money and lives in an old run down trailer due to never saving.

Having the newest toys and gadgets. I remember being jealous of a kid that had a Nintendo, diamondback bike, and all the ninja turtle action figures. I just assumed his parents were filthy rich and wish mine were too.

Vacations to places other than Gatlinburg, Gulf Shores, Galveston, and Disney World
WTF-You got to go to all of those places as a kid? I got biloxi on occasion and I had nothing to compare it to, so it was like heaven until I got older

Are you trying to say the poor schools are staying open?

having a 150 ft yacht instead of the 100 footer we had. it was awful floating into juan les pins for summer and seeing the other families had a full staff of servants and we only had 5. Don't even get me started on my dad's "luxury" helicopter, it was anything but!

So many kids grew up thinking orange juice came in a frozen tube. Concentrate for the win!

Most Southerners were relatively poor until the 80's or 90's. Most families (Working class or just middle class) did not have money, and did a lot of things to save. Scrimping was the only way to make it.
Most of the OT is just a couple of generations from working class or poverty. And that's the norm. Credit has changed the world over he past 40 years, but credit was too expensive for most 40-50 years ago.

I used to think that people who lived in Shenandoah were rich. If you had more than 2 TMNT toys, your parents were rich.
I come from a very modest family because of my dad's ill health, but I was always happy. Spent many days fishing from the shoulder of LA1 and wouldn't trade it for any toy or gadget in the world.

Yep, we were never bored. Always out playing ball or fishing.
The world was much larger then, you really didn't know that you were any different than others, except I literally had to earn everything I owned, except clothing.
Much less class conscious. Our hood had the superintendent of schools, and regular working stiffs.

Fashion designer, low level work for low level pay but the benefits aren't bad - travel worldwide, access to clothes, etc.
