Families that took vacations that weren’t actually just going to a family reunion in a different state.

Buying hamburger and hotdog buns. When I was a kid, my mom made us use sliced bread for everything. When I asked for hamburger buns, she slapped me and said “we’re not rich”. I think about it every time I throw buns into the shopping cart - I have made it.

Great Recession
We only had one foreclosure in our neighborhood. It didn't seem to have a huge impact in the South. Initially, the problems were with pensions, the finance industry, and the ones whose mortgage interest rates jumped to a point of personal unaffordability.
What's interesting is that unemployment didn't even start to rise until months after the recession started, only after Obama took office did it start to get out of control. Peak was nearly a year later in October 2009 at 10%.
I can't actually remember anyone I know losing their jobs in Birmingham. It seems like the Rust Belt had it the worst where manufacturing took a huge hit with their investments, along with other factors

A two story house..... I always felt like I was at a rich friends house when they had an upstairs place. Go upstairs and play video games and be somewhat secluded from the parents.

Rich meaning you got the newest version of Madden before Christmas

My neighbors who had multiple dirt bikes and four wheelers. All I had was a measly thunder cart and three wheeler.

The families that had Kentwood water delivered to their house each month.
Neighbors had it. Beat drinking from the hose pipe after playing wiffle ball during those Summer evenings.

People that went on vacations. Our first vacation was a weekend trip to a crappy motel in Baton Rouge(from new Iberia) when I was 11 or so.
A car that didn’t require magazines/newspapers stuffed between the windshield and dash to keep it from rattling
Clothes bought from the mall, not the tg&y
Electricity and/or water never got turned off

tg&y Remember those. Gibsons and Globe too.
Mom made her clothes, and did seamstress work for a few other people. She loved the patterns and fabric at TG&Y.
Kids without patches on pants were either girls or rich. I was just thinking how frugal people were in the 60's and 70's compared to today.
We didn't take vacations every year, but a few years pop saved enough cash for us to travel.

And time. Everyone gets 24 hours a day. Doesn’t matter how wealthy you are, you can’t buy time.

But you can afford better doctoral care. So maybe it can buy better health

I ran a crew back when the Louisiana Lottery first became a thing. These guys were dirt poor, working on the farm for cash under the table. We would often talk about what we would do if we won the new lotto. I remember one dude saying that in addition to getting new rims for his ride, he would build an annex onto his trailer. That was it--new rims and a side room. Even as a teenager I was dumbfounded by that worldview. Win a few million in cash but no land, no house, not even a new car. Just rims and a covered porch.
