I had no idea what rich looked like until I was in grade school. A friend of my parents always drove fairly new Lincolns and had a swimming pool, and I associated that with “rich”.

Fun Fact:

The richest man in rural Georgia is actually decided by who owns the most above ground pools on one piece of land.

Getting to have the Barbie Dream House and ALL the Barbie high fashion outfits.

I thought my paternal grandparents were rich because they always had a late model Cadillac and my grandfather always wore suits. In reality, the Cadillacs were company cars because he was a funeral director.

There were two families I knew growing up that I considered "rich". One owned an insurance business and a jetski dealership, had a huge RV, new cars every year, ski vacations in Colorado, etc. The other drove their kids to school in a hummer and owned their own private 9 hole golf course on their property.

This. Not as much growing up as it was in college, but my folks bought a condo at the beach when I was a freshman, and built a new house shortly after. They were sort of downsizing and spent more time at the beach, plus we could go almost any time we wanted to. They kept it a long time, and eventually sold it when my oldest child was almost 3, which seemed odd to me. You'd think they would want to take their grandkids often, but it was a good run of a free place at the beach.

I remember the same girl always won the Liberty Card limo rides because her parents just bought as many Liberty Cards as needed for her to win.

She might as well have been Elon Musk

Having a 2 story house meant you were rich to me. Didn’t matter about the quality or size of that house, if it was 2 stories then I equated that to rich.

So I grew up poor, I mean pooooor so being rich to me meant having electricity that didn't get cut off every once in a while, having non government cheese to eat, not being on the school lunch program, decent clothes, things that are really basic.

I got "rich" in high school when I could wok for myself. Actually at 12 when I was detasseling in the summer was when my wealth started building.

Now I pay more in tuition than both my mom and step-dad made while I was growing up.

Same.

Almost everyone in our town lived in basic 1200 sq ft homes. There were few two story homes in town.

There was one legit rich kid, he got a new trans am every year. He's an engineer now, probably lived higher on the hog in HS than he does now.
