What can be done to put a stop to garbage people stealing people’s catalytic converters?

'My car sounded like a tractor,' thieves target woman's car as she went Christmas shopping
BATON ROUGE- A woman shopping at the mall said it took 20 minutes for thieves to target her new car as she completed some last minute Christmas shopping last week.
Susan Parker said when she went to leave the mall, her car sounded like a tractor. When she looked underneath her car, she saw bits and pieces of metal missing from where thieves disconnected her catalytic converter.
Mechanics told WBRZ the piece of equipment is necessary for emissions and contains precious metals inside.
Repair shop owners say the thieves can make up to $300 on each converter. Meanwhile, it will cost vehicle owners between $500 to $2,000 to replace catalytic converters depending on the type of car they drive.
"They should go find a job, a real job" Parker said. "A lot of people are hiring."
At T&M Muffler Shop in Baton Rouge, Manager Robert Taplin can't keep up with the influx of cars he's seeing.
"This is the worst we've ever seen it," Taplin said. "Never seen anything like it before."
As we were at his shop, he was working on two vehicles that had their catalytic converters sawed off and stolen in the middle of the night.

The fast cash is available for thieves who know what they are doing and can remove the converters in a couple of minutes. Drivers only realize something is not right when they start their car.
This kind of stuff makes me sick to my stomach, not just in how it hurts the victims and how calloused one must be to do something like that, but in the complete helplessness and uselessness of our police, leaders, and elected officials are in tackling problems like this and so many others caused by the leaches of society. It’s like we live in a forever state of perpetual victimhood without any answer besides grin and bear it.
Who are these people selling these to and cant we somehow find out who they’re selling it to and prosecute them to put an end to the practice?
I don’t know, but I suppose I just have a problem accepting our fate that we just have to keep taking it from the cellar dwellers of society. It’s sickening.

Cut a part off of them for every part they cut off a vehicle
ETA: who is buying catalytic converters? Make it not worth the headache

If we require proof of vaccination to steal catalytic converters that would at least slow down the problem.

Need more cars to fall on them while they’re in the act like that story I read a few weeks ago.

One advantage of low riders in this case.

Write your phone and vehicle Identification number on it

Make an example. Have them quartered and display the remains.

It was a shame when we did away with public hangings. These people would be a perfect fit for us to bring back this lost ritual.

Make the penalty for buying or being in the possession of a stolen cat so harsh that the demand dries up.
As long as there's money to be made, the scum will risk it.

My company (Lily, Inc) has put out a directive that all company vehicles will have their cat converters painted blue, and they have put out notice to the scrap dealers. Also, all vehicles inside locked parking overnight wherever available. It’s a start.
I eventually got the protective skids placed underneath my Tundra after the SOBs hit me a few months ago.

They contain platinum.

They’ve cut back on it here by enforcing penalties against those buying them.
They busted a large ring that was a family (Mom, Dad, Uncle, Two kids) that were stealing them. They were using the kids while they were underaged to do the actual theft in case they got caught.

Wow. That’s dirty.
How old were the kids? Liquidate the adults and spay and neuter the kids, that family isn’t gonna be anything but a drain on society

Scrappers buy them and don't ask any questions. Until they start putting serial numbers on the converters themselves and require documentation to buy/sell them, this won't end.

Boy, that’s some low life’s right there, huh?

I’m certain someone saw this going down and they did nothing. People don’t look out for each other anymore.

Skid plates for catalytic converter protection. They've been out for a while.
