Any John Feinstein book would fill this bill. Has written books on almost all types of professional sports as well as college football and basketball. I have found every one to be excellent.

This.

A Good Walk Spoiled
The Majors
Open
Tales from Q School

All very good.

I have The Betrayal by Charles Fountain in my "to read" stack. It is about the 1919 World Series scandal. I bought it after I started watching Boardwalk Empire earlier this year.
