What are your top ten nonfiction sports books to gift your literate friends this Xmas?

I always try to five books as gifts every year especially for family members , coworkers and friends that I want to give something to with a bit of meaning but won’t have a hefty price tag. A well thought out book to me means more than an expensive bottle of scotch or bourbon. Much more personal and obviously something that will stand the test of time. Any suggestions on ones that might not be quite known? Tia

Imperfect, the Jim Abbott book is a good one.

Never knew this existed. As a kid I hoarded his rookie cards. Thanks for this.

Are they LSU fans? Meat Market is a great read with O when he was at Ole Miss. Goes behind the scenes on recruiting.

All baseball and all worth the price:
1 The Mick - Mickey Mantle
2 Moneyball - Michael Lewis
3 The Glory of Their Times - Lawrence S. Ritter
4 Baseball's Most Wanted - Floyd Conner
One interesting item: On April 2, 1931 Jackie Mitchell pitched in an exhibition game for the Chattanooga Lookouts against the mighty New York Yankees, and stunned the crowd by striking out both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Jackie was a seventeen-year-old girl. The very next day Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis banned women from playing professional baseball.

Any John Feinstein book would fill this bill. Has written books on almost all types of professional sports as well as college football and basketball. I have found every one to be excellent.

Beyond Weird by Philip Ball. It is a great contemporary overview of the current thoughts on quantum mechanics. It is an accessible book for pretty much anyone and a pretty engaging read regarding a fascinating subject that is often difficult to approach.
