You are correct. If they ever move past grab-arse game room stuff to tournament play they will have to master the legal serve.

Part of the problem is the ultra competitive culture that is travel ping pong, with its fancy $200 paddles and parents just living their lives through their children.

Has anyone here been to the Baton Rouge Table Tennis association get togethers on Wednesdays and Saturdays? I have been tempted but I would like to hear some reports first.

Was he holding the ball against the paddle and spinning it as his serve?

Although, IMO, holding the ball against the paddle is a greater offense.
It's a death penalty offense. It's basically the most advantageous thing you can do.

He is saying most amateurs will not put the ball on the palm of their hand, hand flat and facing up, pushing the ball at least 6inches in the air with their palm and then proceed to hit the ball with the paddle without masking your hit and behind the line. That is the only way to serve that is legal in the sport of ping pong, any other way isn't allowed.

This is correct. It is amazing how much an illegal server is knocked off their game when forced to do it correctly.

I think part of it is mental and the other part is they aren't comfortable with their non-dominant hand, so they don't know how to control the ball on serves. This trickles down to them not even wanting to serve in fear of messing up.

So assuming you toss it up properly, do you also have to serve it cross court?

I go to a great fitness club. A bunch of Russians are constantly playing ping pong on the frickin' basketball court. Go play in your goddamn basement for fricksake.

I want a ping pong table now

Nope. Anywhere is fine.
