What are your thoughts on people who buy things from Goodwill and sell them for a profit?

I get a little confused on this one. Part of me thinks "cool, you found a way to earn money". Another part of me thinks it's trashy and taking advantage of people making donations to help others in need. Then there's the part that's screw Goodwill because they are profiting off of donations too.
I recently ran into a situation with this. My ex and her BF are doing this and they have no issues with it. However, they lack basic morals and ethics, hence the reason I left her. Recently my kid came home with a pair of Oakley sunglasses and said he got them for $20. Cool, except his mom's BF probably paid $5 for them and sold them to my kid for a profit. Now I have a problem with this because they shouldn't be profiting off of a kid on the garbage they buy from Goodwill. I ask his mom about it and all she will admit to is that my kid paid $20 for them and she has no idea what her BF paid for them. So she knows he turned a profit off of the kid but doesn't want to admit it.
I leave it at that with her. I'm not going to start a war over $20 sunglasses, especially with someone who fails to see the issue and condones profiting off of her child.
I talked with my kid and explained to him that if he wants to buy anything off of them that it's ok. However, never agree to pay them more than what they originally paid for it. I told him if it's something he really wants and they won't agree to that, let me know and I'll go buy it for him. I told him I'd take him directly to the Oakley store and buy him a new pair for $150 before I allow them to profit off of him with their junk.

Yes, my ex has some trashy tendencies. It's only because she's too dumb to realize it due to being raised by her trashy mom.
I made mistakes when I was young, I know.

FYI....Goodwill itself is a privately owned, for profit entity.

Goodwill takes free things and sells them for profit.
They aren't a charity.

Well, it's not like they're stealing it.

Good will gets things for free as sells them for profit.
If the market will bear something, let it ride.

Goodwill is selling for a profit, so who cares if somebody else does a better job of valuing merchandise than they do.

Goodwill is an employment company, not a company helping the poor. So this isn't some moral question

I’ve never once thought about them. I didn’t even know it was a thing

Trashy to sell anything to the kid of the mom you’re banging.

Goodwill sets its own price. If you can buy from them and sell higher, good for you. Many "vintage stores", which are thrift stores for fancy people who won't set foot in a dirty Goodwill, buy at Goodwill and mark the product up to sell at their store.

And for profit.
This is fair game and I know of two people that bargain hunt collectible vinyls and such at goodwill and sell them.
Its their hobby. I don't know what those poor people will do without that vintage David Bowie vinyl!

Are you aware of what the CEO of Goodwill earns?
Posted on 8/8/18 at 2:18 pm to pickle311
I have no problem with people turning a profit off of purchases at Goodwill. No different to me than people buying things off the clearance aisles at Target or Lowes and selling them marked up on Facebook or Amazon. Hell I paid for most of my honeymoon flipping garage sale junk on eBay during its golden years, it was a fun, cheap and lucrative side hustle for awhule.
However selling anything to your significant other's kid is trashy as frick, no matter the price point.

Your kid should have went to Goodwill and found them first if he wanted them for $5.
He is paying a premium for not having to dig through garbage to find the treasure.

never heard of this. but, buying for one price and selling for a higher price is how business works.
