We had several drinking related incidents (NOT automobile related) freshman year. I bet cost us $50k out of pocket. Two involving the ER and two years of surgery and PT. Another where, through the grace of GOD, an LSU football coach saved his arse passed out in front of a Circle K before he could be murdered.

Don’t. If shite goes sideways, and it will at some point, those parents will sue the shite out of you. And you may catch a criminal charge for contributing to delinquency of a minor or worse.

He lost use of two thumbs after a shopping cart incident (LSU beat Bama tho)
Collar bone was shattered separate incident-- some shenanigans tailgating.
And GOD bless the football coach that found him in BR and threw him in the back of his pickup truck for safe keeping. If you are reading this.. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Of all three kids, he's the one most likely to die by Alligator. And the king of "Hey y'all, watch this!"

I guess I grew up in another time or place. Pretty much everyone of my friends parents let us drink at their houses starting at about 15 years old when we started driving. The drivers werent allowed to leave if theyve been drinking. With it being so common, no one really got out of control and when we got to college, it wasnt some new thing to be around alcohol. This was late 90s

damn! that's a rough patch, with permanent reminders, hope the kid has straightened it out

You need to sit them down and tell them that the President believes that kids half their age are smart enough to determine that they want they penises surgically removed but doesn’t believe they are smart enough to drink responsibly. Make better decisions.

In this case, I'd likely call it out because I'd be pissed about having to make another trip to the store.
Real answer here. Agree this would piss me off more than anything

What the hell? Was this a permanent deal?

My old man told me to call him anytime I had a drink and there would be no consequences. I trusted him when he followed through. He never let on he told mom about our agreement. I didn’t want to let him down. At home he was not providing drinks for kids period. He understood the liability I think.

I graduated high school in 1990. For sure a different time and place now, especially since I have a 20 something and a 14 year old. A few of my high school buddies parents gave zero fricks about drinking at their house. Obviously those were the houses we went to on most nights before we actually went out but I do remember that once we started drinking, we were on lockdown. That's why my group of buddies started camping out. That was slang amongst our crew for no curfew and basically do anything you want. The only downside was we actually had to go through the motions of getting camping shite put together on a Friday night so our parents wouldn't question things.
I literally thank God we never had a tragedy on one of these so called camping trips or cell phones being invented.
As for letting teenagers other than your own drink on your watch, that is a bad idea. Very bad. Too much exposure for sue happy people these days.

Glad I grew up in a much simpler time. When in high school a group of us would get together at a friends house after the Friday night football games that had a pool table in the garage, along with a beer fridge.
The guys dad was cool and would let us have a few beers as long as he got our parents permission for him to do so and none of us were planning on driving.
I can still remember my very first taste of beer when I was still a little kid. My dad poured me some of his Jax into one of those short glasses to drink when we were eating boiled crabs.
This was back when the legal drinking age was still only 18 before the Feds got involved and raised it to 21.

Someone is going to teach them about drinking. It had best be you teaching them about drinking responsibly.
You don't want them going behind your back hiding it from you.

I'll let my girls (19 and 17) have a drink at home while in the pool, but neither is allowed to leave the house the rest of the day and I'm not giving any of their friends any drinks. Period, end of story.
Taking a beach trip with my kids later this month, and they are each bringing a friend. They won't be allowed to drink at all. Period.

quote:This is NOT a tough question. Do you like your house, your car? Or do you mind selling everything after declaring bankruptcy and living in an apartment? Phuck that. I've worked too long and hard to have some punk kid (not mine) screw up and ruin my life for me. Your insurance company will NOT cover you in the scenario where someone elses underage kid is drinking on your property and gets hurt or hurts someone else. And if you think your close friends won't sue you, just wait until their kid is hurt. It's just not worth it.
Man this is a tough question.
We went through this w our 16 yo in the past year. He had some football teammates over and they hung in my shop (I was out of town) and my wife didn't keep a close eye on them. Someone brought some beer and they drank a pint of Fireball I had. Then they the were wrestling around and destroyed my project table. I didn't get mad. We had a long talk about drinking and moderation and growing up. I him that he can have friends over, but only when I'm there and they can't bring booze and I'll be keeping tabs on them. He's had a few friends over since then, but not the rowdy ones that came before. I don't GAF if I'm not the cool dad.

Had pins removed last Christmas. Still can't feel them. The irony is that he can no longer open a can of beer by himself. (there were a few months he couldn't even hold a can.
Karma.

What are the parameters for teenagers drinking

I think the tricky situation is more if there are other people’s kids there, than yours.
How do their parents handle it?
You can make rules for your kids, but not necessarily for others.
I don’t have kids this age yet - but I think with MY kids once they are around that age, on occasion, I’ll let them under my direct supervision - at our house - absolutely no chance of leaving.
They’re going to do it anyway, is the reality - yours and others. I think the worst place for a kid to “learn” to drink is at college. I’d rather my kids responsibly learn their limits before then - and also experience a nasty hangover followed with a day full of manual labor, just like my old man did with me.
Idk - everyone’s different on how they handle it.
I’d say the only wrong way is to allow others kids to drink under your supervision without their parents permission, and to allow your kids to un supervised. That’s my view though. Everyone’s different , some are too lenient, some are sticks in the mud, and some are naive.
