What are the chances? My car battery was actually bad?

Brought my car to a tire shop this morning to get a set of tire swapped. First problem, that shite took 2 1/2 hours.
But anyway, the guy comes out with his diagnostic sheet showing all the test they did. He said my battery is only showing 469 CCA and it needs to be changed. He wants $250 to do that.
I tell him to hold off as the battery has never once given any indication of struggling, including this very morning when it was cold and I started it up at 7 AM to bring it to his shop. It’s also always caused the car to crank extremely fast showing no signs of being on its last legs.
Dude says OK and finally finishes up the tire job, then says his technician needed to come get the jumper because the car won’t start.
At this point nearly three hours into a simple tire replacement, I told him frick it just changed the fricking battery so I can get on my way.
So my question for O2 mechanics, batteries go dead that quickly? Do they go from what appears to be perfect starting power at 7 AM to needs a job to start at 10:30 AM?

He was full of shite. I’ve always ran a battery to failure. More likely than not it’ll be dead at home, or just carry cables with you.
You paid this a-hole twice the price of a battery to undo two screws. This is why I do all the maintenance on my vehicles.
Was this NTB? Wife brought her car there a couple years ago after having a flat and I was out of town. They pulled the same battery bullshite. She told them no and the battery lasted another year.

Tell me you went to a Firestone without telling me you went to a Firestone.

Should have sent your wife to take care of it. They wouldn't have f'd her over as bad as they did you.

Not a mechanic but I’ve had a battery or two go bad before. If you’ve never had to jump it before chances are you just got fleeced

Can confirm.

Luckily, I had a charger and was able to jump it with that.

How old was the battery? After about three years, you are on borrowed time. May last quite a while or go dead with no damned warning.
Even though it can go dead immediately, your experience sounds like a scam. When he said the “technician needed to come get the jumper because the car won’t start” I would have called his bluff and told him to boost it and keep it running. I’d then drive home and see if it would restart.
If it didn’t start, I’d call for some prices, boost and go replace. If it started fine, I’d scratch that crook off the list of service providers.

... You took him at his word about the car suddenly not starting at the perfect time for him to scam you out of $250??

Price Leblanc told me my battery was failing and recommended changing it. I declined. That was a year ago. The battery is going strong.

I wen to one of those places. I wanted them to look over all of the little things like fluid levels, pads, rotors, suspension, belts, ec. I went online and reserved a spot. About half an hour after they opened, at like 9:30 on a Saturday. Got there at 9:20, they took my car, and said it'd be about an hour. I asked if all you do is swap tires, brakes, and change oil, how could the 3 cars that were here before me take everyone here working an hour to finish? And what was the point of reserving a time if people can just drive in off the street and get service before me? The manager just looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. So I sat down. An hour later, and my car hadn't even been moved from the lot into the shop. I asked how much longer. "About an hour" was the answer. So I asked for my keys, drove to Take 5, and was back home 45 minutes later.

Not saying it legit happened here for you but yes, I’ve had batteries in multiple vehicles and toys go bad and die out of nowhere when they had just been running earlier. Had one die while I was on top of the Mississippi River Bridge while driving. Changed it and had no problems after. Batteries don’t seem to last like they used to.

You can't change your own tires?

Look at the number of modules on newer vehicles compared to just 20 years ago. Also take into account Onstar and services like that, require constant monitoring that draws a battery down. Never mind the shitty Chinese lead used in batteries now.
And frick an AGM battery. 350-400 for a battery hurts
