I visited St. Augustine, and really liked it, but thought it was shockingly expensive for a Southern city.

To be fair, I was doing tourist shite so they were gouging me.

Places I could probably live and really enjoy it (but my wife could not handle the winters)

Grand Junction, Colorado.
Astoria, Oregon

I did really like Bandera, Texas.

Kenai, Alaska is really nice but I have not been there after early October so I suspect I would not like the winters.

St. George Island, Florida is probably the place I would live if I didn't have to work and couldn't afford to live in Maui.

Not sure if that is the spirit of this thread but those are a few places I have been that I really like.

Pittsburgh

It's been decades since I have been there but in the early 80s, Pittsburgh was a lot nicer than the public perception of the city. And from what I have heard, it is much better now than it But that is purely hearsay for me.was then.

Tulsa is a trash arse city. If your idea of nice is driving around trailer parks and chain restaurants, you be you.

I'm gonna have to disagree. Nothing to do there. Except blizzards in winter

No, it’s expensive, but loved it as well. They have a variety of B&B’s right there off old town where everything is walkable. We liked everything about St. John’s county.

Love Des Moines, there’s a shitload to do and Downtown is walkable and safe with a restaurant and pub on every corner. Des Moines & Raccoon River corridor is great for hiking & biking. Best AAA stadium and fans @ Iowa Cubs. Weather can be dicey year round as we’ve been there for 2 blizzards, but downtown has in-closed elevated walk-ways that gets you everywhere.
Best breakfasts in the Mid-West bar none.

Jacksonville is pretty much forgotten about besides the Jaguars. But, you have all of the amenities, traffic isn't bad, roads are great, beach nearby (including nicer beaches like St. Simons and Ponte Vedra).

It seems like a really nice place to raise a family and a much more "chill" area of Florida. Not to mention that while it's still very hot, it's not Miami hot either.

Ashland, OR. Beautiful area, very safe and many cultural activities for a small city of about 20,000. Home to the world-famous Shakespearean Festival. The downside is the high cost of housing. It is also home to Southern Oregon University.

I don't doubt it...lol. What's interesting is that he owns a private oil % gas company, Kaiser Francis. I've done contract work for them. He gives a lot of money back to the community which I respect him for that...whether he does or doesnt smoke a Doobie now amd then.
