Went to high school with a girl who didn't know the Spice Girls were British.

She always assumed they were from England.

She didn't know England was British.

Hard to type that so it comes across as so..

She also didn't know the Titanic was going to sink at the end.

The fall of Byzantium was more like in between the Dark Ages and the Renaissance, rather than pre Dark Ages.

Not arguing with you. I could be wrong, and again, my list of events was very general.

That said, I'd always heard that the Dark Ages are generally considered to have occurred between the fall of the (eastern) Roman Empire to the discovery of the "New World".

Isn't the eastern Roman Empire the same thing as the Byzantine Empire? Capitol of which was Constantinople? Fell around 500 AD? New World discovered around 1,500 AD? Dark Ages about 500 AD to about 1500 AD? Please tell me that's GENERALLY correct.

No. The "Dark Ages" run from the fall of the Western Empire to the beginning of the renaissance in the 14th Century. Some scholars debate that and instead end the "Dark Ages" with the reign of Charlemagne and others end it with The Crusades. The Eastern Empire (The Byzantines) fell during the 15th Century, well after the end of the "Dark Ages".

Personally, I like the Charlemagne definition and go with the beginning of the Medieval Warm Period marking the end of the "Dark Ages" and beginning the Middle Medieval Period which lasts until the Crusades, which mark the Late Medieval Period.

This thread has been awesome, definitely a good read.

I have a co-worker that is delightfully ignorant. He's the nicest guy in the world but wont ever be accused of being a Rhode's Scholar.

He and I are the building's fire warden's, mainly because we got to skip work for one morning to attend the training class. After the training we did a fire safety talk with the company and he got up in front of 60 people and told everyone that the "Mustard" point for evacuation was across the street at the big tree... I didn't have the heart to tell him.

This is the same guy who helped his dog birth a litter of puppies and said that he had to get them out of the "placebo" sack quick or they would die.

Yes, Byzantium was the same as the Eastern Roman Empire (and yes on Constantinople as well), but it didn't fall until May 29, 1453.

Byzantine nobles who left prior to the collapse were responsible for sparking the Renaissance.

Damn. You could've saved us two pages of this thread. It was good to learn that Northern Ireland is not technically considered part of Britain.
