They have to have it off and in their locker at school and I'm pretty strict with how often they use it at home. It has advantages like being able to get a hold of them when they're out playing and giving them the ability to call 911 anytime.

At the earliest, My daughter will get one when she starts driving by herself.

My son, 10 had a sleepover for his birthday in early December and every kid except two had a cell phone.
So my wife and I got him one for Christmas. So far it's been fine. He only gets it on weekends once his chores are done.

Got my oldest one in 6th grade.. doesn't take it to school and it sleeps in our room.. between sports and roaming the neighborhood it's convienant for me and the wife to be able to get in touch with him instead of calling/texting parents.

I applaud you making your kids pay for a phone...although it will be more convenient for you if they had one

and for all the excuses like "after school activities," its BS. kids want phones to text, snapchat and whatever else. parents just cant say 'no' to their kids anymore.
Feel the exact same way. I try to tell my 3 year old no more than yes so that he is ok with being told no later in life.
I have no idea if what I'm doing is better than people that give their kids everything but I can tell you that I can tell my 3 year old that no he can't have that really cool toy that he wants and he says ok daddy and we move on about our business.
Sorry for that run on sentence

It's not about age so much as it is about maturity. There are plenty of ten year olds that are more responsible than a lot of fourteen year old kids.

My 8 year old has a gizmo gadget. He can call me, his mom, or his grandfather. We are the only ones that can call him on it. Will meet all his cell phone needs for the next 3-4 years.

16 is too late. Your kids will hate you so much

some people are more concerned with raising their kids correctly than being their friend.

Yall have no idea how bad an idea it is to give young kids cellphones. I've encountered many parents who've found out that their kids nudes are now on social media or they're conversing with pedophiles, etc. My kids won't get phones with data until they're around 16. Flip phones before that at probablyth 13.

I keep seeing kids younger and younger with phones. My wife and I agreed that our kids won't have their first phone until they are 16 and have their own job to pay for it. I think phones are a bad idea for kids.
So when your child has afterschool activities your going to stay there the whole time? If dance practice ends early or baseball practice gets rain and ends early your going to leave your kid a quarter and tell them to use a pay phone to call you?
Cause we found once your child is old enough to be at such things and you don't stay there the whole time they need to be able to reach you for a ride or other things come up as well. Even scheduled events end early or run late. We've even run into complete wrong time on the email situation for various activities.
You gonna have a land line in the house? Your 14 year old isn't gonna be able to call 911 if there is a fire?
About age 8-9 children need a phone for the most part.

Why do parents hate the idea of being able to easily keep in touch with their kids?
I got my first cell phone at age 12 right before a week long summer camp.

There are practical reasons to give a kid a phone. It doesn't have to be a case of trying to be their friend.

My 8 year old daughter asks for one atleast every few days. We've decided on 6th grade when she is old enough for after school activities. Her school allows them to be dropped off in the front office by the students each day. I'd entertain getting her something earlier if it were not a smartphone.
Stepson got one at 8, but it was not a smart phone and he had a crazy mother who moved him across the state. It was our only means to reach him until we got full custody at 9. After that we used it to reach him when he visited his mother. He got an iPhone around 7-8th grade.
Kids never need phones late at night. It took until he was 17 that we allowed him to not place it in the kitchen on the charger each night.
We are strict parents, but so far it's working. Also, phones are my property and I'll dig at any moments notice. Don't answer and I'll shut it off then you won't get it for a month. Crack it and your paying for screen replacement. Case off and it's mine...god we're assholes.
