I worked with a small mom and pop operation (4 generations). Big seafood industry does not give a frick, it's about the money only. They take everything they can, now. There is no tomorrow for them.
Long lines are horrible because they aren't monitored 24/7. I cut their lines when I find them fishing In a restricted area.
Don't know much about shrimping other than the bycatch sucks.
Fish farms are a pollutant to bodies of water both inland and at sea. I don't really see an answer for human population growth and demand.
Manageability will remain for some species not others. It's amazing how much I have seen change in my short life. Species that used to be out of control are mostly gone now.
I'm not in the marine biology field anymore so I really can't answer as well as some people on this board.

Again with all due respect, I disagree. The commercial fisherman I have experienced- gill netters in Terrebonne Parish- were despicable. But the guides and sport fisherman were some of the strongest advocates and defenders of conservation and the resource out there. I don't think you can generalize humans any more than the harvest of a whale shark or any other fish. Humans have done good as well as harm.

As I stated before, it's not that simple when trying to offer a high grade product to sell. Some spieces have to be bled out when caught. Take our yellowfin, blackfin and bluefin tuna for example.

Anyone that enjoys seeing an animal suffer and not feel sympothy for that animal is a coward. If a bunch of people threw you on a hot concrete slab and started sawing you in half from your feet up might think differently if you were in their shoes. The same thing goes for burning animals. They feel pain just like you and I do.

I've also been a professional sport fisherman for around 20 years. Humans don't do any good for any fisheries, in my mind.

Ok, I agree with everything you said. I hate indiscriminate hArvesting techniques like long lining and I just don't think we are capable enough to manage the fishery given its vastness and the aforementioned conflict of interest. And I REALLY don't trust China and other governments to monitor their commercial fisherman. Other good examples of how human behavior goes the wrong way is exemplified in the study of Caribbean lobster divers and commercial boats. Not only is their disregard for the species but human life as well.
By contrast a cattle rancher knows exactly how many head of cattle he has, how many he will breed and how many he will slaughter, and he paid to feed and grow them. conversely, deer populations were hunted to species threatening numbers in the 1900s until laws were passed to restrict hunting rights.
If there's s free natural resource that man can profit from, we've proven time and time again that we will rape that resource until there's nothing left.

Whale sharks are filter feeders ... they eat plankton.
At this time, they are a vunerable species which probably means they will ultimately be an endangered species in the future.
