“Be home when the streetlights come on!”
Other than that, off, exploring, riding bikes for miles. It was awesome. Lack of technology was a great thing as a kid. ‘81 checking in

Or you just hold that antenna right until the scrambled feed kind of comes through
Or you just find these weird newspaper quality pornos in the woods. Always in the woods for some reason

Yep. People would be outside. Working in their yards, socializing with neighbors etc..
Walk outside right now and tell me what you see.
We now live in populated ghost towns.

There also was no bullying. Everyone seemed to have gotten along and people visited other people.

was definitely a quiet little country suburb. Basically no crime. I remember when we got a McDonald's when I was in HS. We were big time all of the sudden
Yep, no more driving all the way down Greenwell Springs to Monterrey. First bush I ever felt in my S-10 was in the Zoar Baptist parking lot across the street after we had just grabbed some milkshakes from McDs. Good times.

I'll have to disagree with you a little there. We had bullies but we just checked each other's knuckles. I was always bigger than most kids my age so I didn't really get picked on too much.

I mean we called each other names but it wasn’t anything like it is now. There was never any fist fights.
I went without a shirt until I was 5 y/o.
Just one of the boys

I was born in '86 and growing up in the 90's was fricking awesome. Have no desire to trade it.

I'm sure we probably know each other or a lot of the same people. My dad still owns a number of properties in Central. It's just not a small quiet town like it was back then.
I remember riding my bike to May's AG on Lovett to get slush puppies during the summer after we promised our parents we wouldn't get on the big roads

I don’t see America ever getting back to how great things seemed to be in the 80s based on movies/TV if there’s any accuracy to them at all. I was born in 87, so I didn’t get to experience it. Must’ve been nice.
I am older than you and grew up in the 80's. Yes it was a great time because technology was just coming along. It may not have been as morally "pure" of a time as, say, the 1950's but family values were still important, the music was great, the VCR changed TV, video game consoles were just coming around, cable TV was becoming a thing, rock music was popular, it was OK to be white, the SJW crowd was not really a thing (at least not in 90% of the country), Reagan was president, the economy was recovering from Carter, there were no major wars (just skirmishes like Grenada).
Of course, everyone might have the same memory of their own childhood. Boomers probably think the 50's and 60's were the best ever. WWII generation probably thinks the 30's were great (well, actually probably not. The 30's sucked). But you get the idea.

Born in 86. 3 older siblings. Honestly the 90s and early 2000s childhood was no different than the 80s the toys just a little newer. We rode our bikes all day, played Nintendo, watched wrasslin', no cell phones, no internet..
I think about 2005 when everyone finally had high speed and YouTube and all the social media got big, and everyone got smart phones that's when everything changed
Yep. I'm not too much younger and I don't remember many fat kids in those days. Seems like everyone was in some after school activity and the internet wasn't good enough for people to be on it all day.
These days you see fat kids all the time, no doubt glued to Ipads and fortnite.

It's fascinating how nostalgia works.
When I was a teeny tot it was Happy Days and nostalgia for the '50s.
When I was a student at LSU in the '80s I recall reading an interview w/some girl who was nostalgic for the '60s b/c "everything was so innocent and carefree then" (!!!)
I don't know how, but somehow the past is always innocent.
I am definitely nostalgic about one aspect of the '80s though: the city of BR was much nicer. The reason for this was mainly I don't want to get banned.

90s to early 2000s were pretty good too...I was born in 87 and your entire post applied to my memories as well. Things were much better before internet and social media really took off. And by social media, I'm including YouTube type stuff. Back then you actually had to use your imagination....now there's several videos all over the internet of any and everything you can think of. Had to watch America's funniest home videos to actually see something funny. Now you can type any string of adjectives in and a video will exist for it. What good can come of having that?

It certainly wasn't as common. I remember having maybe 3-4 fat kids in my class in elementary/middle school. We spent a lot more time outdoors, playing sports and riding bikes than kids do now.
