Even Zappa became vapid in the 80s. It was a horrible time.

True, Frank maybe sold out his 60s/70s principles a tad.
But, America was coming out of Vietnam and ready to lighten the mood, the Cold War was much like today, both sides too big to play anything but proxy wars, and The Clash 'London Calling' in late 1979 rang in the '80s like a cannon..a fun time to be young.

Born in 1981. Probably best time to be a kid in history.
Video games were just starting so they were fun but didn't rule your life and were pretty cheap. Really we just waited for the new Madden every year and some Mortal Kombat action. Safe times, no cell phones, awesome pro sports teams to follow.
What is funny though is I grew up in an evangelical family so all I ever heard was how America was falling apart, the debt was out of control, Clinton should be impeached etc.

Having grown up in the 80s & 90s, I can say it was a great time to grow up. But as others have pointed out, up until about 2005-2007ish everything was relatively the same from about 78-2005. Sure tv and tech improved but the real change in day to day lives ahopened with the social media age.
The 80 to mid 90s was the most violent and dangerous time to live in America, but so many here didn't even lock their doors, why? Because people didn't have cell phones and social media getting momma's all up in arms. Now mom's see a post from a news station in Seattle and talk about how dangerous the world is.
Not to mention apparently every damn Wal Mart in the south has people waiting to just steal kids in broad daylight. (Kind of a tangent, but how fricking stupid do you have to be to believe these kinds of post, never are the police called or asked to investigate and all the fricking women know someone it happened too, fricking idiots all if them)
My point is, society in general didn't change until social media. Even when i was in HS in 98-2001, many of my friends had cable internet. All that meant was Napster was the shite, but we didn't spend all day on that. We picked shite to download and let it do its thing and then went chasing pussy or playing sports or video games if it was raining.
TLDR: social media ruined childhood.

Even without social media there were a lot of kidnapping and violent crime fears in the 80's when I was growing up.
That said, there was perhaps an unhealthy amount of freedom kids in the 80's were given. There were days, especially in the summer, when I was out the door bright and early and wouldn't return home until dark and never checked in with my mom. While she later admitted she always had a general idea where I was through other moms in the area, I never sensed at the time that she did and my friends and I did some stuff not fit for kids our age - shoplifting, light vandalism, breaking & entering, etc. This wasn't a regular part of our behavior, but boredom would set in some days, and we'd get mischievous. I can't imagine my kids today having some of the freedoms I had growing up, and that actually makes me a little sad.
