Never been to a wedding with this rule and never been to a wedding where people were "buried face first into their phones". This is being an arse about a non-existent problem. I still make fun of my wife for the stupid stuff she worried about for our wedding that nobody noticed or cared about. And she really wasn't that bad. Yes it's "your day", but don't use it to shout to the world that if you give me free reign, I'm going to be a total dick.

That's what a repeating shutter is for.
Shooting a wedding is very mentally and physically demanding (ask anyone who has done it). So I guess if the bride and groom want to make it easier for the photographer, then so be it. But I think the ban on cell phones and such is a bit narcissistic on the bride and groom's part and a little pissy on the photographer's part.

Do you think it's narcissistic that an individual can't accommodate someone else's request- especially one as trivial and simple as this?
Maybe they just don't want someone's phone going off during the ceremony?
I get that people want and may even need their phone ( work related). But I find the reactions in this thread over the top. Just leave the fricking phone alone for an hour or two. Or don't go.

As someone that got married JUST before digital cameras exploded on the scene and quite a few years before smart phones were a thing, I would have loved for people to take as many photos as possible at my wedding. My "professional" photographer sucked arse and took about 300 shots total, 0 of which turned out wonderfully.
If anything, just have signs and your ushers/officiant say "no flash photography in church."

I guess it's always happened, but with the prevalence of cell phone cameras, it happens more nowadays than it used to.
ETA: Unfortunately, just telling people not to take pics doesn't always work so maybe the bride/groom are taking the next step in "banning" cellphones.
My brother photographers requested this at his wedding and it went well. Of course a few people took pictures here and there but overall it was not an issue.

If you can't do without your cellphone for a little while or you're afraid you'll miss your call in to an emergency appendectomy, don't go.

I actually think the attempt to ban cell phones at the wedding is primarily due to how they want their pictures to look. If they aren't banned, then you will have pictures where most of your guest will be holding up a cell phone trying to take their own pics or videos of the event. When you are paying out the arse for nice wedding pictures, it does look very tacky when you see this shite in the background.

As a photographer, sometimes it's hard to shoot when half of the people are holding up cell phones, and having flashes go off when you are trying to shoot a wedding. I'm not making excuses for them, of defending them mind you, but most of the time they pay about 5k for a wedding to be photographed and don't want to see everyone with their hands in the air?
