No. My argument is people are dumb for wearing them to protect themselves. It's counterproductive to that because it gives you a false sense of security and encourages you to touch your face.

Now, a properly fitted, fresh, clean N95 probably offers some protection against breathing the same air for prolonged periods of time in enclosed spaces with someone infected. But droplets from coughing and sneezing will probably get through that - and at least contaminate it and if you're not very careful (Americans aren't) in removing the mask, you're incurring risk there.

So, bottom line - yes all these people running around half-assed wearing surgical masks and bandanas to protect themselves are dumb. Extra dumb.

Thankfully, their stupidity is at least marginally helping protect the rest of us from getting some of their germs.

Anything that keeps your respiratory droplets closer to your face and not spreading out and about (primarily in the event of a sneeze or a cough) works.

The CDC and government came as close as possible to a lie when they said they didn't work - it was a thinly veiled coverup to help medical professionals ramp up and keep their supply lines going.

A private company can do as they wish. But it is a bit asinine to require people to wear a mask that may or not may be clean; people who may or may not wash their hands come in and then touch everything in the store; have your own employees not wear masks correctly; employees wear gloves, but don't change them thereby cross-contaminating everything they touch; give out bags that may or may not be contaminated by all the touching then telling shoppers they can't bring their own bags in the store.

Anyone who chooses to wear a mask should do so. Anyone who doesn't shouldn't have to.

The Burger King down the street has a sign up that you can't go through the drive-thru without a mask. Then proceed to touch card after card without changing their gloves. Order after order without changing gloves. And wear the same mask all day long. Pulling it up and down as needed so people can understand them.

It's kind of like insisting on a condom after you're already pregnant.

I agree that if old, sickly people want to venture out, they should be wearing a n95 or stay home (or they are comfortable with the risk). As a young person, If I wear something that's not n95 into a crowded store, I am doing it strictly to minimize my spread, not my risk of contracting it.

Cloths, bandanas, surgical masks (they still wear those things in OR's right?) aren't the perfect solution, but pretending like nothing is the same or better is rediculous and honestly stop complaining about shite being closed if this is the hill you want to die on

This right here. I know I am good but I am happy to see all the idiots wearing masks because it helps me out. Plus it gives me an awesome chuckle every time those people glare at me for not wearing a mask.

The fact that these dummies think wrapping a bandanna around their face makes them morally superior is entertaining as hell.

No they don’t.

How could they not help?

If you’re infected (symptomatic or not) and you cough with a mask on, the mask is going to catch some droplets right? That reduces the number of viruses you’re expelling.

The degree to which they help is debatable but it’s beyond silly to say they don’t help at all.

Between the karens, baws, trashy and watch threads, this is more
obnoxious than the virus.

If it did, it would already be legally required by now.

What I take from this is that you'd change your opinion if masks became legally required.

[quote]made a post a couple of weeks ago linking multiple news outlets, even the surgeon general, all stating that masks don't really help.

Masks are a feel good thing, they don't really do much.

The Democrats are embracing the hell out of it. That's all you see.

bunch of people at the grocery store were wearing masks over their mouths, but not their noses. It was comical.

The OT keeps saying this but from my accounts all I've really seen are people covering both their mouths and noses

It doesn't necessarily make them morally superior, though it does make them less of an a-hole than you.

Wearing anything to protect yourself, short of a properly fitted respirator is counterproductive. I stand by it.
