Ha! You are kidding, right? Law school is already 1/2 a year too long. The last semester is spent on BS.
Your firm should train them to do that work needed or not hire them. Very few attorneys actually try cases anymore. Now you want transactional attorneys, family law attorneys and bankers to go to school 2 more years because your firm is too cheap to send them to trial training programs and put them in the courtroom under guidance of seasoned partners? That's ridiculous.
Plenty of very talented trial attorneys go to public defender offices or prosecution jobs at a significant pay cut to learn those skills out of law school. Then they move into private practice and know their way around the well before 99% of fifth year associates at the big shot defense firms.

Very few lawyers graduate law school knowing anything about actually practicing. The third year should be a clerking requirement where it is spent off campus at a firm. But that will never happen because of the law school money grab

Law schools suck because of the bar exam. They teach the test (reciting code articles and latin definitions). That is the focus because bar passage rate is a huge part of a school’s ranking and prestige. The bar exam isn’t the least bit practical. If anything, it is testing how well one can commit malpractice.
If we change the bar exam to better reflect practice, then law schools will better prepare students to practice.

Been in a long time man, you will go to OBC at UVA and it’s easy to beat up 2, 3 UVA law students per day.

If anything it should be shortened and focused far more on bar passage and practical applications like trial prep, client intake and management, negotiation and communication skills, etc.

In theory I think it's fine that you don't have practical skills when you leave. Smart people will figure it out with ease like everyone else.
But like most higher ed, we're not really training students to think anymore, we're letting them dictate their own education. Not surprisingly, a lot of them elect less rigorous stuff.
Law school should be 3 full years of agonizingly detailed study of obscure legal issues, IMO. But since it isn't, and you can waste a year and tens of thousands of dollars in public loans on SJW classes, it's a little harder to push back against the "practical training" folks.

I don't know about LA, but I disagree. First, my law school didn't teach bar passage at all. I mean, there was some discussion, like "take commercial paper because it's a bar topic" but not really.
Second, I think the bar is about as fair of a standardized pre-practice test as you can get. Issue spotting is a real world tool for any attorney. At least for us, the bar was about identifying all possible issues, not knowing code sections or definitions or even solutions to the problems spotted. And that's pretty much a foundational skill for practice, IMO.

I don't know how I feel about law school. Looking back most of it was useless information. I think with a curriculum more focused on practical skills (clinics), students would be more able to hit the ground running out of law school.
