There are just so many variables. I want people who can write and who can think their way around the entirety of a dispute or issue. My personal experience was that law school provides that if you're invested in changing how you think/write. I don't care if a first year associate knows how to take a deposition. I just want you to be able to write a brief where your arguments don't have gaping holes, or come in my office and string together a coherent strategy for a given matter.
Of course, in a different practice or a different size practice, the needs may be a lot different, and the practical skills component may be more important.

The lack of competence you describe is due in no small part to the fact that todays 20 year olds grew up with a cell phone in their hands and as such have experienced practically nothing in their lives that requires interpersonal interaction with strangers.

If you've ever seen a Contracting Department at a corporation that doesn't use JDs I'll show you a bunch of contracts that would be hysterical to litigate.

Good post. But a first year guy can “take” a depo but he/she is just reading script. Man give me somebody that understands why and how you get positive information/evidence out of a witness and you have a keeper.

I did some provider contracting for a health plan last year. I'm now back to being a full time "benefits" attorney if you will. I worked a compliance for a different health plan for 7 months this year. Was beefing my credentials.
Basically everything around the health insurance/disability/pharmacy and so on for our workers is what I do. It's nice. Could never had pulled this off when I lived in NO.

That's why that "lawyers are so fricking dumb they don't know my business" dude made me laugh earlier.
That's the small/medium business principal who takes a draft of a prior contract, license agreement or something, adds his businessman touches to it and then gets involved in multi-year litigation as a result.

Ya, I'm fortunate to be married to a lawyer who knows how to write a great resume

All the medical fields have internships/clinicals/residencies. I don't think we'll ever see something similar in law though

One of my best friends is doing JAG in a few weeks. Starts off in Ft Benning for a few weeks and then UVA. I think all of you do that, right? And then around May you go to your real locations for 1-2 years and then a second location.

On the Plaintiffs side being prepared for deposition is priority one. But prep only gets you to the altar, understanding what you need and how to get it is a skill, an art.
