Change it 30 minutes, split the difference and leave it alone

Did any of these studies attempt to account for morning commutes being in the dark longer and what impact that would have on accidents?
How is that any different than the evening commute being in the dark? One is gonna be in the dark regardless.

I'm probably in the minority, but there is something cozy about the early sunset in the winter. I really enjoy it in late November and December when Christmas lights are up.
Actually, this reminds me that moving back the transition from DST to ST has killed the vibe of Halloween. Kids shouldn't have to wait until almost 7 to start Trick or Treating.

Hell, move it 30 minutes either way and call it good.
do you realize how dumb this is? Throwing US timezones and times 30 minutes off from the rest of the world?

We lost our natural rhythm under Biden. I’m team DST, start school an hour later until daylight comes early.

Personal preference I guess.
At least in the south where most of this board lives, standard time is in effect when it's most comfortable outside (aka not the summer heat) but we don't get to enjoy during the weekdays at all because it gets dark too early.
I'll happily put up with driving to work in the dark if it means that I get to enjoy some fresh air and daylight to go along with the mild temperatures that the fall and winter months bring after clocking out.

It’s never been the same. Congress killed Halloween.
And for everyone that says “just move the start time later”, it never happened.

Great post. Those long spring and summer afternoons are nice, but they have their time. The long winter evenings can be nice too. We would be better off working with the natural rhythm of the seasons.

Sucks when you live up north. It can get dark at 4:30 in the afternoon.

That’s not true, though. Depending where you live in the US, the shortest day of the year has somewhere in the range of 9-10 hours of daylight. There are places with a little more (like Miami) or a lot less (like Alaska) but most of the country falls in that range.
So for most people working office jobs, it’s not true that “one is gonna be in the dark regardless.”
The other thing that constantly gets overlooked is that the “best” solution entirely depends on where you live in relation to the time zones. Permanent DST for someone in Milwaukee is virtually the exact same thing as permanent standard time for someone in Grand Rapids, MI. Permanent DST for someone in Birmingham is virtually the exact same thing as permanent standard time for someone in Atlanta. Going to permanent DST puts the latest sunrise at 8:19 AM in Chicago, but at 9:07 AM in Indianapolis.
What works fine in one location can be horrible in another. I think permanent standard time is less disruptive, from that standpoint, because it doesn’t impact the latest sunrises (which would require a lot more societal adjustment than impacting the latest sunsets in the summer time).

I love it, especially as the seasons are, changing to my favorite part of the year. Southern fall.

Standard time is more in tune with our natural rhythm. Please lord standard time! You enjoy getting home after dark for a third of the year?
I really don’t mind. Also I work from home so I’m already home when it’s dark?

It would be keeping Daylight Savings Time year round for more daylight, not suspending it
DST always annoyed me. If anything it should be the opposite of how it’s done. No one needs daylight at 8pm and darkness at 5pm.

Waking up in darkness is horrible and unnatural. If I can get some sunshine going early it is much easier to wake up and start the day. Because that’s how our bodies are programmed to work.
Sunrise being at 9am would be horrible for people.

Maybe congress should just pass a bill to make the earth slow down while over the US so we get more sunlight.
We could put up sun speed limit signs next to gun free zones.

So we would be one of those crazy areas being a half hour off of GMT.
If we are going to go nuts with time how about creating smaller time zones that shift by :15 minutes. That way 12 pm or 1pm is solar noon in that area.
Since most devices use GPS and computer timing we could go nuts as we travel east or west losing and gaining 15 minutes every 100 or 200 miles.
