Yea, that part is a problem. Publicly saying what you think can get you fired if it is considered racists/hateful/hurtful/discriminatory by anyone willing to click the HR button. It keeps most if the normal working folk calm.

But you can't reason or negotiate with these people. I'm not telling you Trump is the answer, but the idea that moderates can prevail in a battle against extremists via moderation and common sense just isn't true.
They cannot be appeased. You have to beat them.

This is such a lazy point of view. “Moderate” doesn’t mean you have no views. It means you have views that fall on both sides of the political spectrum.
There is no party in today’s America for someone who opposes the Citizens United decision, opposes gun control, supports enforcement of anti-trust laws, opposes universal basic income, supports enforcement of environmental regulations while also opposing unreasonable changes to those regulations, supports enforcement of our immigration laws while also opposing measures that aren’t cost-effective, supports a reduction in military spending within reason.... you get the idea.
That’s the problem with identity/tribal politics. The “us vs. them” mentality forces people to pick a side. But that’s not how it’s supposed to fricking work. We aren’t supposed to have to decide which gang of politicians we dislike more and join the other party, ride or die. You say “any way the wind blows”; I say that’s how people who “pick a side” think. You say moderates “lack conviction”; I say moderates are the only ones with any conviction. It’s amazing to see how folks allow the political party to guide their thinking rather than electing politicians who hold their beliefs.
Compromise is a good thing. For example, supermajority requirements force politicians to reach across the aisle and find common ground, rather than simply allowing whoever holds the majority this year to impose their will. But those long-standing norms have been wiped out over the past 20 years or so - yes - by both sides.

In fairness I think he's defending moderation and compromise as legitimate ideas (which they are), not necessarily as legitimate tools to defeat radical leftism (which they likely aren't).
Although I do think "moderates" can become useful if they're rabid defenders of liberal values - free speech, pluralism, etc. I don't need you to support Citizens United if you're on board with beating back the mob.

This will probably fade and some of the waffling Democrats will go back to giving the radicals the sideeye.
But each time this happens the rhetoric gets more and more violent and "dismantling the system" makes headway. While I don't think we're particularly close to some 50-50 affair in the US, or even really a 25-25 battle with 50% sitting it out, this event has shown that 5% (with perhaps only 1% engaging in the tyranny) can create genuine havoc.
