We are now 81 years removed from Hiroshima...

On this date in 1945, the B-29 Superfortress, Enola Gay, piloted by Col. Paul Tibbetts, took off from the island of Tinian in the Marianas. Its objective was the city of Hiroshima: headquarters of the Second General Army as well as the 5th Infantry Division. Along with the 40,000 military personnel that were stationed within the city, Hiroshima was also an important industrial and naval repair port for the Japanese war effort.
At 8:15 AM local time, the Enola Gay dropped a 15 kt atomic bomb known as Little Boy over the city from a height of 31,000 feet. Some 45 seconds later, the bomb detonated at a height of 1,900 feet above the city. The explosion was catastrophic. Between 70,000-80,000 people are estimated to have been killed in the seconds, minutes, and hours after the first initial flash. Long term, it is believed that a total of 140,000 Hiroshima residences eventually died as a result of the blast.

Two summers ago I was in Japan for a work meeting and ended up sitting across a table from the Deputy Commander of the JDF Air Force. We were about thirty minutes into the meeting when it suddenly occurred to me that these guys were the enemy within the life time of people still living.
Then I remembered that we dropped two atomic bombs on them. It was a weird revelation as I sat there.

The next time you feel unlucky or that life has screwed you over, consider the case of Tsutomu Yamaguchi. A work mix-up left him stranded in Hiroshima on August 6. Guess what happened next. Suffering from severe wounds, he then went to his home town - Nagasaki - to recuperate. Guess what happened next.

They had to be used. Showing the world what they could do is exactly why they haven't been used since.

The civilian leaders had wanted to surrender back in the spring of ‘45 during the fire bombing raids, but the military leaders and cabinet still held out and wanted to fight on even after the two atomic bombs.
I believe they held a vote and decided to ask Emperor Hirohito his decision on the matter (which was unheard of). Thankfully, Hirohito had compassion on his people for their suffering and decided to unconditionally surrender to the Allied powers. His surrender address to the people was the first time many of them had ever heard his spoken voice because the emperor was considered a god to the Japanese people.

Totally agree... also fair to say the fanatical leaders caused the death of up to (by some counts) 160,000 needlessly...
Their fanaticism failed to let them see they were already beat...

My uncle was radar operator on the B-29 “Dangerous Lady”, stationed on Tinian, and flew over Hiroshima on a mission not long after the atomic bomb was dropped and he later described the city to my father as burning cinder. This is a photo he took of the Enola Gay on Tinian after the bomb was dropped and it was no longer a secret to the world.

I remember there was a big push to blame America for dropping the bombs.. This was when Obama was president.. Then there was a re-education of the dumbasses to learn all the events that led up to the dropping the bombs.. The dumbasses soon disappeared..

They didn’t do themselves any favors, but we were going to drop it regardless. We could’ve ended the war with a long blockade and more fire bombing campaigns. Japan would’ve eventually begged for US assistance. But Hiroshima was not about ending the war. It was about sending a message to Stalin and the Soviet Union.
