A freezemiser on every outdoor faucet ... they automatically drip and drip more the colder it gets. I have six and no problems.

A pencil is crazy to me. That’s a ton of water flowing. I do a stream like the gel ink replacement cartridges on a G2. That’s like 1/3 of a #2 pencil.

I do a mix of warm and cold and do for every faucet and shower. We also open the cabinet doors to let air circulate.

It’ll be about 20 degrees tonight but we did this when it was sub 10 degrees for about a week straight and survived it.

I just buy new G2's. You actually buy the ink replacements?

If you live on a slab there is zero reason to drip pipes unless it’ll be below freezing for 3+ days straight.

To each their own tho.

In Houston, I've only ever had pipes freeze in pier & beam houses where there's not much you can do for pipes running under the house.

But older folks seem to love the ritual of preparing for the dreaded freeze. There's no arguing with my parents, other than to say I don't think it's going to get too bad.

Opening the cabinets beneath the sink supposedly helps too, but I don't know if it really matters either.

Leave one or two dripping and open the cabinets to all sinks.

The one farthest from the source to keep pressure off the pipes.

I’m puzzled by this. I get doing the one farthest from the source, although it’s impossible to know which is farthest unless you saw the house roughed in. But you are not keeping any pressure off the pipes, nor would you want to. If you drip a faucet you will actually get some pressure drop, but it would be very slight. Like if you had 40 PSIG at the water meter you might have 39.9 PSIG at your dripping faucet.

My builder installed something on my plumbing system that results in not having to wait but a second or 2 when you turn on the hot water from any faucet. Maybe it’s something that circulates the hot water continuously. I don’t know what it is.

Does anyone know what this thing is, and if it protects the pipes from freezing?

I open the cabinets beneath my sinks to let the internal heat help out.

I have my outdoor kitchen, indoor kitchen, and 1 bathroom dripping at the moment. Everything is covered outside so no exposed pipe but I also know the pipe is only 6-10 inches underground.

Just wanted add…..

If you have a pool, set the pump to run overnight to keep water flowing in the pool pipes

You have a recirculating pump with a return loop

Or a piggy back through the cold

Drip the farthest faucet from the input line.

If you have a tankless water heater, run the hot and the cold water

Also, run an outside trickle

I live in a slab house but had a wrapped outdoor spigot freeze in 2017 when it dropped to the high teens. It melted later in the day. What is the potential harm in that if I had multiple indoor faucets trickling?

I used to have a nicer pen but loved the G2 ink so I would put it in the nicer pen body.
