If the draft law was as convoluted and skewed toward helping rich people avoid military service, I woukd hope that all Americans would upset.
On the one hand, I think draft dodging means another American went in your place and you failed to help your countrymen. On the other, that war was so f'ed up and useless that I can't blame someone for trying to avoid it.

Don't think people today would allow conscription (slavery), thankfully.

Not in person.
May be true.May not be.LBJ had royally screwed things up.I think it's possible that certain agencies are not above threatening the life of any citizen.Even a President.

Draft dodgers were heroes. Didn't realize that when I was a kid. I was raised to believe that they were cowards.

How would today’s youth react to such a thought / draft?
many would do exactly like what Trump and Bill Clinton did...

Uh...if we had a draft with a sitting president who dodged the draft 5 times I'm pretty sure it wouldn't go over too well...

Last Days in Vietnam
A great documentary.
This new Ken Burns 10-part series that the OP is talking about is a masterpiece.

It's scary to see the parallels between Vietnam and Iraq/Afghanistan

Probably with the exception of an actual invasion of the U.S. mainland.

As I was watching, there were several portions where all I could think is "this is Afghanistan".
-No clear, coherent goals beyond the tactical level
-An indigenous population caught between a hammer and an anvil that just wanted to be left alone
-A massively corrupt national government that embezzled the majority of funds and supplies given to them by the US
-An incompetent military we were trying to train that had only half-hearted interest in defending their own country.
Scary, scary parallels. And to think we've been engaged in combat for 50% more time than in Vietnam.

The estimated cost to fight the entire Vietnam War is said to be $1T (adjusted to today’s dollar) while the expected cost of our perpetual war in the ME is expected to top $6T and the current plan is to increase troop levels...we just never learn.

but this is a new eight-part series by Burns.
Probably one of the best and most complete series I've ever seen. Very interesting

Yep.
It's even worse now that we use our military as another diplomatic tool rather than a last option lethal force.

Yes, so every Trump Hater should realize that Trump is a HERO for avoiding service in Vietnam.

Every Viet Nam veteran still living should be given transportation to LBJ's grave to piss directly on the headstone.

How did the draft work out during Vietnam? The first time some rich kid gets out of it for some "medical reason" like bone spurs, people will be pissed.

Those exemptions weren't unique to the US. The affluent people and party officials in NV apparently did the same for their kids as well.

The draft is a horrible device of big government.
It is how old men get young men to do their fighting.
Nixon did change the way the draft was conducted which eliminated a lot of loopholes the politically well connected were using. However once Nixon arrived we started withdrawing troops in a big way. I voted for Ford in 76 in my first vote because Nixon had ended the draft.
