Trust me I wasn't implying that it was uniquely American. I just don't see how anyone can argue that forcing people to join the military and go to war would be good for national morale.

I think today's youth would have to do just like those who were drafted to Vietnam. They would have to grow up real quick. That would be their only option if they wanted survive.. Or at least have a better chance to survive.
We don't need another Vietnam War.. Or war in general, but I do think today's youth could benefit from having to serve in the military.. In Israel, once everyone turns 18 they have to serve in the military for at least 2 years right? I think it would benefit society if today's youth were able to see another side of life.
It would probably reduce crime to some degree because it would give people, who otherwise don't have many options after high school, something that could allow them to help themselves. More kids than ever are coming home from college to live their their parents, many of them don't have a solid plan as to when they are going to move out, etc. They depend on their parents... Having to serve in the military in some form, could help them become more independent, etc..

Actually I think that poll was about the demonstrations during the DNC that year and how the police beat the frick out of anybody that was protesting. They were non violent protests btw.

This is totally different than the “peaceful protest” that are occurring now. The protests nowadays do turn violent and the police have every right to make them disperse.
ETA: and I laugh at all of the random guys from the poli board come over here to dispute what I said earlier about how the alt-right posters over there would condone the shooting of those Kent State college kids. If you spend any amount of time on the poli board you can see it’s populated by some of the most radical people the alt-right has to offer. And all they can say in rubuttal is “you’re stupid”.

The show has opened my eyes as to the extent of Govt knowledge of the fact that we were going to lose the war, yet, despite that, continuing onward for political reasons. Kennedy, Johnson, McNamera...all knew we could not win, were not winning, yet lied to the public.
...a here we are still dicking around in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Agreed. Or some form of mandated Govt service, like the CCC, Peace Corps, anything that provided some discipline and an opportunity for public service. Might keep some kids out of jail.

well, i'm old now. prolly would have gone nuts if forced into military at 18. Worked out well for my brother though, but we were different.

The South Vietnamese weren't cooperating with the talks long before that. Besides, Nixon couldn't have "halted" something that already wasn't effective, nor did he did he have the power to as someone who didn't currently hold any political office.
Basically, no one, including the South Vietnamese, liked the way LBJ was running the war, and they didn't want to be sold out by him in the talks with the commies just so the Dems could win the '68 election.

Just went to the tv board, not a damn thing on there on the first page.
I was particular intrigued by the evacuation of the embassey as USA pulled out. I didnt realize the public announcements, so depresing. No wonder vets were treated like shite upon returning. The anger was against the govt, not the soldiers themselves. But the individuals took the blame, imo.

I've seen the embassy evacuation covered many times. Did not realize that other plans were in place but not used. The head of the embassy did not feel a serious attack would occur?

No. That’s not what this doc said. They ended the segment on the Kent State shootings by citing a poll taken just after the event in which 58% of Americans thought the shootings were justified.
The polls on approval of what happened at the DNC and later in DC were in a totally different part of the doc.
