I can't imagine a scenario where I'd get on a plane and go to war. Especially one as shitty and meaningless as 'Nam.

I do. Retired from the military, but fly fixed-wing in my real job. Still, very boring relative to flying Helos.

Having recently retired from an air carrier, I worked with many that made the transition from mil/civ pretty easy, some it took a little while longer. But, I know where you are coming from with the comparison between FW & RW.
Be safe up there.

The show said that, right after it happened, 58% of Americans polled thought the Kent State shootings were justified.

I wanted the show to have one or two of those folks appear and explain their view.

Much like they reacted in the 60s.

Did you miss the part where JFK says that the war can't be won, but if he pulls out he won't be re-elected? This was years before Nixon had anything to do with Vietnam. And LBJ was worse than JFK when it came to Vietnam.

So it was obviously Nixon's fault.

People bowed down to authority much easier back then.

Given the current political state and unrest of the nation, would a draft be a positive activity for the future of the American way of life to restore the values instilled generations prior.

To be fair to the youth of today, a lot of the youth back then weren't that into it.

nixon certainly could've ended it more quickly and saved a lot of lives and money, but anyone who thinks he's more culpable than lbj hasn't read any history or watched the show ...

Tigris, I have watched every minute of the documentary. The statement by JFK, about not being elected if he pulls out pissed me off more than anything else.
This was a terrible time in our history.

LBJ was the worst.

The Gulf of Tonken(sp) incident.
He wasn't going to be "the 1st American President to lose a war".

I've heard someone that was there say that LBJ was told he wouldn't be allowed to be President a 2nd term. That if he ran and was elected,he would not be allowed to lead the Republic. He would be killed.

He didn't run.

I'm too old for the draft now but I don't wish war on anyone. My great uncle could barely talk about fighting in the Pacific in WWII unless he had a few pops in him.

My grandad was in Korea. He would never talk about it. Hell, his hearing as so fricked up afterwards, he didn't talk much at all, because conversations were too frustrating.

When Vietnam started, my Dad was going to volunteer after high school, even though he had a full ride waiting for him at Georgia Tech. When he told my grandad, my grandad became mad as hell. He pretty much forced my Dad to go to college and get his education.

If not for that, I wouldn't be here today.

That was a good show. Hippies protested back then the same way the hippies protest today.

The whole “play stupid games...” crew.

I'm sure there are posters there who think the national guard should open fire on the next NFL player to kneel during the anthem.

A little confused. I know his first term wasn't a full term but he did win a second term by a landslide. Might be reading you wrong.

eta-guessing you meant second full term since he was eligible to run again?

If my sons would get drafted to fight for a war like that I would hide them. frick that, why kill themselves for no good reason.
